On Saturday, July 18th, I and 20 other guests have had the honor of attending an early play session of Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve.
Today the embargo imposed by Bandai Namco has been lifted and I can finally share some of my experience:
The event went as followed:
1) Introduction
2) 1 hour of game time, playing mission 4 and mission 11
3) Talk section with Kono Kazutoki (Brand Directior) and Shimomoto Manabu (Game Producer)
The introduction section was very brief, they gave us instructions on what we can and can't do, and then they presented Kono san and Shimomoto san to us. (I was sitting literally right next to Kono๐ณ)
During that time we were also allowed to freely walk around and interact with Kono san and Shimomoto, so I took this opportunity to complete a mission I have started 5 and a half years ago, returning the Ace Combat 3 Voice Actors scripts to their rightful home.
This was made possible with the aide of GaiaBlitz, Krishty, Ribbon-Blue and Zanzor, each of which has donated to the cause of getting these voice actor books, after which I took upon the task of preserving them digitally and then ensuring they return home to Japan.
However after consulting with the JP branch of Bandai Namco, it was decided that I will keep these books and continue to preserve them, and so I shall.
I took a commemorative photo with both Kono san and Shimomoto san, each of us holding one of those books, I will filled with happiness but I was also very much nervous. ;w;
Regarding the game session, there isn't much new to be added to what is not already known and out there, I do wish to keep the spoilers to a minimum so I won't talk much about the story in the missions and keep details about the gameplay to a minimum.
I first started playing Mission 4 - The Fall of the Numbered Fleets, since I have very little experience with playing Ace Combat on consoles, I wanted to try out novice controls for once as I never experienced them before. (You can laugh at me all you want, I know I am not going to beat the novice allegations, I am cringe but I am free)
I gave the F/A-18C a try at first, it felt kind of sluggish but I had a good time flying around with it on novice controls, I event went through the tunnel.
After that, I played Mission 11 - Maximum Payload, on Expert controls, and felt more at home with the game.
It was kinda interesting to see sub-components weren't strictly attached to the largest aircraft in the mission, but also the smaller ones supporting them, seems like you have more ways to shoot down an aircraft now, which I find nice.
I must say that the overall game looks beautiful and plays great, it feels like a solid Ace Combat title and I very much enjoyed the return of the squadron controls and decision making.
While there wasn't really anything new that we don't already know, they did unlock the full aircraft roster shown in previous demo sessions, so I took this opportunity to give the Typhoon a try.
The multi-Special Weapon function is a nice addition and makes your aircraft far more versatile, at the cost of ammo capacity. (And it might need some getting used to, unless you played Ace Combat: Joint Assault or Project Wingman)
The return of Squadron commands and decision making (YES / NO) is much appreciated, and this time it seems that in the higher difficulties your squad mates are actually vital to both your survival and the mission's success, they can be quite brutal sometimes, and even defend you pretty well if you tell them to cover you.
I was also well impressed with the replay system, while it doesn't necessarily incorporate anything new, the pilot camera is a nice addition, and it's also nice to see the pilot respond and move based on the aircraft own's movement and flight direction.
Oh right, and the missile warning changed, it's not what we're familiar from other Ace Combat games anymore. :3c
Overall, the game felt like a mixture of Ace Combat 3, Ace Combat 5 and even some Ace Combat Zero sprinkled in, it may yet be one of the best Ace Combat games in the series.
As for the talk section, Kono san and Shimomoto san were asked questions made by all the guests attending the event, all of which were made before the actual event via a form, and only 8 of those questions made it to the talk section.
While my Japanese is still not very fluent, and I couldn't remember all the questions and answers, I do recall the following:
1) They were asked which of the characters the team were most fond of...and it was quite obviously, Tasha. :3
2) Assuming I got this right, while there are no branching paths in the game, it seems that certain decisions you make in the missions can affect certain things in future missions, though I had no chance to experience or confirm this, so take it with a grain of salt.
3) This is probably going to be the Ace Combat game with the largest amount of missions ever, though they did not give us specifics about how many missions there are.
4) If I understood correctly, The Land Battleship used by Sotoa was not originally planned to be implemented in the game, it was spontaneously thought of one day and then eventually became a reality.
5) They were also asked what particular things they were most detailed oriented with with the development of this game, and they said that they were detailed oriented with everything, but went all out with the sound this time, going as far as going to the US base in Okinawa to record aircraft sounds and also detonate explosives to record their explosion sounds.
Overall, I had a great time, and I want to thank from the bottom of my heart to Bandai Namco and Project Aces for giving me this opportunity to try out the game early and get some first impressions out for everyone else.
This has the potential to be one of the greatest Ace Combat games ever and I hope it will be so, I can't wait to try out the full game in October!
Once again, thank you so much! <3
By the way, the Nugget drawing was made by @DapperDapperDan, thank you very much! :3c

Another piece of quantum physics in the final Sopranos season, with Carmela and Roe at a Paris restaurant:
Carmela says the people in Paris never existed to her before she went there to see them, and she never existed to them.
Decoherence and entanglement.
@lukekasz@stewartlynch8 For years that defined my workflow: Always create <11 or >12 threads if there is something important to do. 11 or 12 threads only for overnight jobs. Thread priority doesnโt matter, all priorities make D3D11CreateDevice hang.
@lukekasz@stewartlynch8 150 ms? Rookie numbers! For me, it can be 30 seconds with one simple trick:
I have a six-core SMT Ryzen so I create 11 or 12 busy threads on my system. Not 10. Not 13. Exactly 11 or 12.
Every device creation hangs for seconds: Browser tabs, media players, games ๐คท
@MichelGallagh15@UKikaski To my understanding, the post was not so much judging the drunk and more the society that does not care for him.
See last two paragraphs: No safety barriers put up because many in Russia believe that caring is a sign of weakness.
@HorrocksIvan1@UKikaski Agree. No EU stock market drops because Orban is in a bad mood, but that happens a lot with Trump.
Orban, as much as I hate him, didn't drag Europe into an illegal war by attacking from bases of EU allies. He's sabotaging the EU, but to very limited effect.
