@mitchellh My personal perspective on taste is that it is all about personal preferences and "good taste" are personal preferences that align with the personal preferences of a lot of people.
@mitchellh My main advice for people who want to develop good taste is to keep exploring the creative space within their own personal preferences, even if no one else likes it. We need more exploration of new ideas and less derivative ideas.
@mitchellh I think it is also equally valid to only have good taste within a niche, where the audience isn't mainstream. Like various genres of metal music that most people would find off-putting.
@mitchellh This is how new genres of music appear, first being underground and enjoyed by the few, then sometimes becomes more refined and polished to be enjoyed by a wider audience.
@mitchellh Not everyone is lucky enough to have their personal preferences accepted early, and in order to develop their taste they have to keep exploring the creative space within their own personal preferences.
@mitchellh Sometimes you see people who have new ideas that are seen as new, original and good early in their creative journey and they then acquire the confidence to keep being original and are seen as people with good taste.
@mitchellh You then get perceived as being cringe or lame, which can cause a lot of anxiety and its then much easier to just conform to or only slightly evolve existing ideas.
@mitchellh I think one of the main difficulties in developing good taste is about anxiety. To be original and to be yourself requires a lot confidence, especially if everyone tells you that they do not like your work.
@kr1shty@stewartlynch8 I use THREAD_PRIORITY_HIGHEST and I forgot to mention that I also disable throttling on the high priority thread using SetThreadInformation, as shown in the HighQoS example code here:

@stewartlynch8 I profiled Direct3D 11 startup on my Geforce GTX 1070 on Windows 11 using latest NVIDIA drivers.
The NVIDIA driver loads other dlls and a large portion of time is spent in cryptography functions. I guess the drivers are signed and they are verified on each load.
@stewartlynch8 For context, here are the stats from my app once it runs, visually similar to a text editor. VSync off and uncapped framerate. 'UI' is all my code for calling text and shape drawing commands on a Skia Canvas and 'Render' is the time it takes for Skia/GPU to render the frame.
@stewartlynch8 If anyone from Microsoft happens to be reading this and wants to optimize the crypt32.dll functions, then that would be a great π And win for the startup time of all Windows apps using GPU rendering.
@stewartlynch8 I've sped up my app startup time by initializing D3D11 as the first thing on startup in a separate thread, while initializing the rest of my app on the main thread.
Then first draw of the window takes around 20ms, putting the total startup time to around 150 ms.
@GreyAlien If the file locked in a shared read mode, your program can also read it if you specify dwShareMode as FILE_SHARE_READ when opening the file using CreateFileW.

@supahvee1234 Sorry, I mean that it only works for ToString(Color::Red) and not ToString(color), where color is a enum Color variable.
I was hoping C++26 reflection would be paired with some kind of compile codegen so it could generate the full ToString(Color color) function.
