Assoc. Prof. @UTHealth. We study bacterial adhesion & mechanosensing to understand & treat infection; Favourite model are ๐. Mom of a toddler #AndAScientist
We're excited to share a new tool that facilitates the analysis of gut motility in #zebrafish. Our preprint describes how it can be applied to characterize peristalsis and other oscillatory movements in individual gut segments based on image time series:

Trying to make some agar plates; prepared a stack of tissue culture dishes ready to pour. Realized my mistake in time - got petri dishes instead. Start pouring plates, agar puddle collects on top of the plate lid. Science is going well today ๐
Coming week is Graduate Student Appreciation Week! We appreciate our @MDA_UTHGrad students, their passion, hard work, and ideas they bring to our community all year round! But next week will be filled with events & swag to celebrate them.
The curious world of mechanobiology - probably the only area of science where people will have a conversation involving the words 'flow' and 'friend' that doesn't revolve around the female cycle. @Sanfilippo_JE
Really enjoyed the @EMBLEvents Mechanobiology of the cell surface symposium #EESCellSurface ! Organizers did a fantastic job and made the transition to a virtual format a great experience. There was even live smooth! (not choppy) jazz during the break!
@outagedetect Nope, internet still down. 7 days and counting. 3 - 4 days since power has been restored in the area. What's the holdup @ATTHelp ? A heads up on when we'll get our service back would be nice at the very least #ATToutage#ATTdown
Proud to see former @MDA_UTHGrad student & @MIDatGSBS Alumni Dr. Malik Raynor featured on the list of 1,000 inspiring Black scientists in America too! Go Team Micro! https://t.co/H7AJadIGGi
To zebrafish ECRs and trainees: are you interested in a mentored science writing opportunity? Volunteer to write a "Science Spotlight" piece for the next IZFS News Splash! e.g. https://t.co/aANAKtF1YH. Contact me. @InfoIzfs
@niais Please tell me this is in fact used to evaluate reference writers, and anyone who sends it back with any boxes checked rather than responding wtf will not be consulted for references in future.
Congratulations to @MDA_UTHGrad MID program students:
Jennifer Hurtig, named as a 2021 Dr. John J. Kopchick Fellow & Kim Trinh Nguyen, named as a 2021 Investing in Student Futures Fellow!
We are so proud of you!
@polesasunder Yep, ADHD along some other diagnoses pretty late in life & mostly as a result of frying my brain to the point of being committed to a psych hospital after yrs of trying to self-medicate what I now know to be symptoms that are much better manageable with, you know, actual meds.
Some thoughts on harassment and supporting victims of harassment 1/n: I felt very conflicted about the guy who eventually supported his colleague by providing evidence for her title IX case. But was a bystander who did not take action when the harassment happened years earlier.
7/n It is NOT the victim's duty to make enough ruckus to alert the lifeguard. We are ALL lifeguards & it's our duty to keep the pool safe for swimming.

Just watched 'Picture a scientist' https://t.co/S6EqpOUguN
Had been a while since I cried during a movie. Tears of anger and rage & also tears of gratitude towards the women featured and unfeatured who were brave enough to act, and paved the way for those of us behind them.
6/n And they don't shout or scream a whole lot because their mouth and lungs are already full of water. So although drowning is a painful death, it often is a quiet one...
