I travelled through Great Nicobar today.
These are the most extraordinary forests I have ever seen in my life. Trees older than memory. Forests that took generations to grow.
The people on this island are equally beautiful - both the adivasi communities and the settlers - but they are being robbed of what is rightfully theirs.
The government calls what it is doing here a “Project.” What I have seen is not a project. It is millions of trees marked for the axe. It is 160 square kilometres of rainforest condemned to die. It is communities that have been ignored while their homes have been snatched away.
This is not development. This is destruction dressed in development’s language.
So I will say it plainly, and I will keep saying it: what is being done in Great Nicobar is one of the biggest scams and gravest crimes against this country’s natural and tribal heritage in our lifetime.
It must be stopped. And it can be stopped - if Indians choose to see what I have seen.
In a state where rapists, murderers, pedophiles, mining mafia thugs, drug-smugglers and assorted criminals roam free flaunting their existence -- Savukku Shankar has had the Goondas Act invoked against him three times in two years. As a critic, he might have made peace with the consequences of what comes when you expose a repressive apparatus, but nothing could have prepared any of us for what his mother had to face. In the end, the brutality of the DMK regime's witch-hunt on Shankar claimed his mother's life.
Kamala amma lost her husband in 1991. From that moment, her life revolved around Shankar, he was her world. She single-handedly raised her children, and years later, whenever Shankar was arrested, it was she who went to court, who filed petitions. Even in her last weeks, she was pleading before the court, asking them to remove her son from solitary confinement and allow him access to medical treatment. What was the price she paid for his outspokenness? Faeces and sewage poured into her home by a 20-person mob, and abuse poured on her, while she was trapped inside for five hours. Later, after they had changed homes, the fire service deployed to break open her doors, in a case framed to arrest her son. Her last days spent in hospitals, unable to be with her son in her final moments. What did she, as a mother, do to deserve any of this?
Unlike what the haters and abusers on this hell-site would have one believe, his mother's funeral was the third or fourth time I had ever met Savukku Shankar. When we first met, he recalled seeing me as a schoolgirl accompanying my mother to the High Court (my mother's advocate was someone in whose office he had seen us). That memory -- Shankar talking about my mother as our first point of contact -- kept coming back to me endlessly. And now, watching him on parole, surrounded by uniformed policemen, saying goodbye to his own mother -- it breaks me in ways I will never be able to fully express. I felt like a member of her family though I never got the chance to meet Kamala amma when she was alive.
I went to attend her last rites to say goodbye to a courageous tigress of a woman. I went there to bear witness to what the DMK's oppressive party-state machinery can do when you dare to question their actions. Please read this letter by Savukku Shankar, addressed to all of you, so that her death does not go in vain. His suffering began on 4 May 2024 with his first arrest under this government. On 4 May 2026, when the results are declared, it could end. . .
