After Losing One Child, Cork Dad Begs for Treatment Ireland Still Won’t Fund — While €670 Million Goes to Ukraine

A Cork father whose family has already been devastated by a rare genetic disease is publicly pleading with the Irish Government and HSE to fund Skyclarys (omaveloxolone), the first approved treatment shown to slow the progression of Friedreich’s ataxia.

Craig Coady of Buttevant lost his 13-year-old son Rory to the condition in September 2025. His older son, Paudie (16), also has Friedreich’s ataxia and is deteriorating. The progressive neurodegenerative disorder damages the spinal cord, peripheral nerves, and often the heart. Paudie, who did not need a wheelchair last year, now faces increasing mobility difficulties and fatigue. Coady has said: “I can’t lose him. He is all I have left.”

Around 200 people in Ireland live with Friedreich’s ataxia. Skyclarys received European Commission approval in February 2024 for patients aged 16 and older. It is available in several other European countries, including France, Germany, Portugal, and Spain, but remains unreimbursed in Ireland.

The HSE received the pricing and reimbursement application in August 2024. The HSE Drugs Group deferred a decision in mid-July 2026 pending further specialist input, with a hoped-for resolution within weeks. Taoiseach Micheál Martin has stated he wants patients to access the drug “as fast as we possibly can” and previously told Coady he would do everything possible to help.

Lauren Shaw, another young Irish woman living with the condition, has also appealed publicly for funding, describing progressive damage to the spinal cord and peripheral nerves.Campaigners and support groups have contrasted the delays with Ireland’s overall support for Ukraine.

Recent government announcements, including a further €125 million package, have brought Ireland’s total assistance to Ukraine since Russia’s encroachment in 2022 to more than €670 million (encompassing humanitarian, stabilisation, energy, and non-lethal military support).

Public posts and commentary, including from groups supporting frontline health staff, have highlighted the Coady and Shaw cases alongside this figure, arguing that Irish patients are being left without a treatment that could slow irreversible decline while substantial public funds are directed overseas.

One widely shared post noted the contrast with “almost 200 more people in Ireland” affected and called on Micheál Martin, Simon Harris, and the Government to prioritise funding for Skyclarys immediately.

Friedreich’s ataxia has no cure. Skyclarys is the first therapy demonstrated in trials to slow disease progression. Families emphasise that every month of delay allows further irreversible loss of function. Coady has indicated the ongoing deferral could force extreme measures, including considering relocation abroad for access.

The HSE maintains that reimbursement decisions follow objective clinical and economic assessment processes, with commercial negotiations ongoing. Families and advocates continue to press for an expedited final decision, stressing that time is critical for those living with the rapidly progressive condition.

Rishabh Mahajan (31) formerly of Gardiner St Lower, Dublin 1, pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to 4 counts of offensive conduct of a sexual nature likely to cause fear, distress or alarm after he exposed his genitals in front of 3 different women.

He also pleaded guilty to carrying out a sexual assault relating to these incidents, which took place late at night on various dates in October and November 2024.

Mahajan was sentenced to only 16 months in prison, with 12 months suspended, by Judge Martina Baxter.

Why are early Bolshevik concentration camps never discussed?

Because acknowledging them destroys the preferred timeline and moral hierarchy.

The early Bolshevik concentration camps (1918–mid-1920s) are almost never taught, filmed, or ritualized in the West for the same structural reasons we’ve been tracing the whole time:

1. They break the “Nazis invented it” story

Popular Western education and media still treat concentration camps as a Nazi innovation. The moment you note that the Cheka, Trotsky, and Lenin were running kontslageri in 1918 — complete with forced labor, hostages, class-enemy categories, and high mortality — the uniqueness claim collapses. The Nazis studied and adapted existing models (including Soviet ones). That fact is toxic to the official narrative, so it is simply omitted.

2. It implicates the “good” Bolsheviks

The clean version of history likes to start Soviet mass repression with Stalin in the 1930s. Lenin and Trotsky can then be framed as idealistic revolutionaries whose project was later “betrayed.” Early camps, Red Terror decrees, and the explicit use of concentration camps for class liquidation make that separation impossible. The original leadership built the system. Mentioning it forces an honest look at the entire Bolshevik project rather than a Stalin-only pathology.

3. It collides with the post-1945 moral operating system

After 1945 the Western cultural institutions that control textbooks, museums, documentaries, and prestige media locked in a hierarchy: Nazi crimes = sacred, unique, permanent warning; Communist crimes = complicated, contextual, secondary. Early Bolshevik camps sit at the root of the Communist system. Elevating them would require treating the Soviet ally of WWII as a pioneer of the same methods later used by the enemy. That was politically inconvenient then and remains ideologically inconvenient now.

4. Institutional incentives

Academia and media lean heavily Bolshevik.

Discussing Lenin-era camps in the same register as Auschwitz risks the charge of “equating” or “whataboutism.”

Holocaust education is mandated and funded; equivalent attention to 1918–1923 Soviet camps is not.

The people who staff these institutions inherited a tradition that treated early Soviet violence as regrettable wartime excess rather than foundational policy.

The camps existed. The Bolsheviks named them concentration camps, expanded them, and used them for political and class repression from the first year of their rule.

They are the direct ancestors of the Gulag. They are rarely discussed because the institutions that decide what counts as important history have stronger incentives to keep the spotlight fixed elsewhere.

Eighteen-year-old Maël Le Lagadec has drawn international attention after carrying a newly built wooden cross to the summit of Pic d’Aneto, the highest mountain in the Pyrenees.

On May 9, the young Frenchman climbed for approximately fourteen hours while carrying the 35-kilogram cross on his back, together with a 15-kilogram backpack. Measuring 1.10 metres high, 70 centimetres wide and 11 centimetres thick, the cross was transported to an altitude of 3,404 metres in the Spanish region of Aragon.

The extraordinary journey began after the original metal cross, which had marked the summit since 1951, was cut down with a grinder and stolen in April 2026. Refusing to leave the mountain without its Christian symbol, Maël and a friend decided to build a replacement themselves from black walnut wood.

“A few weeks ago, we discovered that the Aneto cross had disappeared,” he explained. “With a friend, we launched this somewhat crazy project to rebuild it.”

After enduring the exhausting ascent, Maël finally reached the summit and restored the Cross to its place above the Pyrenees. Overcome with emotion, he knelt beside it and wept.

“I arrive, I kneel, and I cry.”

Just spent the day in Dublin, and it has been absolutely destroyed due to the worst imaginable form of uncontrolled mass immigration.

There are more foreigners than natives now in Dublin city centre.

On one side, you have Indians absolutely everywhere. An imported middle class outbidding Irish people for thousands of incredibly precious and scarce homes.

On the other side, you have the worst cultures on earth. Somalis are everywhere. Women in hijabs with large families, Nigerians, Arabs from North Africa and the Middle East, and South Asians from India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh. Many of them are living in social housing or waiting on social housing. Along the river board walk is nothing but single Arab men who have nothing to do all day after claiming asylum on our taxes.

There is no outcome where this is good for Irish society or social cohesion.

This immigration is disastrous both in scale and in the countries migrants were allowed to arrive from in huge numbers. Many of them are from Islamic-majority countries and are culturally incompatible with Ireland.

Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil have destroyed Ireland for temporary and transient US multinational tax revenue. They should all be hauled in front of the courts for what they have done to Ireland.

His own words to his land agent: dispiriting enough to clear a hundred and forty-four quid at the start, and here we are six years on, down five grand. The harvest had been projected at thirty-seven thousand profit. Weather and prices took it.

Now look at what that thousand acres has behind it that yours does not.

One of the best land agents in the country. A farm manager who has worked that ground since he was a teenager. A farm shop with a queue down the lane, a pub, bestselling books, more than a quarter of a million in subsidy across three years, and a television production paying for the entire thing to be filmed.

It is the most commercially advantaged thousand acres in Britain, and the farming still loses money.

That figure should end every conversation about British agriculture, and it is the one number that never makes it onto a campaign graphic. Not the glyphosate. Not the pig housing. The margin.

Because everything people object to on a farm grows straight out of it. The field pushed to the very edge. The hedge that came out because the government paid to have it removed. The shed instead of the yard. The supermarket contract signed below cost because the alternative was no contract. Nobody intensified out of malice. They were priced into it over sixty years by a policy that decided cheap groceries mattered more than a countryside, and by a retail sector that kept the difference.

Britain now grows around sixty per cent of its own food. More than a third of British farmers are past sixty-five.

The man with the Amazon cheque cannot make a thousand acres pay.

The seventy-year-old with three hundred and no film crew is doing it anyway, and being told by people who have never sold a tonne of anything that he is the problem.
