BTS star RM took a detour on Stanford’s campus before the group’s final Bay Area concert — not to a famous landmark, but to a quiet cluster of trees tied to one of K-pop’s most bizarre internet scandals.
Before BTS’ scheduled concert at Stanford Stadium on Tuesday, May 19, RM visited a campus spot fans know as the “Crying Tree,” recreating a famous image of Tablo, the Stanford-educated rapper and leader of the Korean hip-hop group Epik High.
The photo quickly spread among fans after appearing on RM’s Instagram account and being reposted by Tablo.
“omg he actually went to the crying tree,” Tablo wrote on Instagram.
For casual fans, the photo may have looked like a simple campus snapshot. But for many K-pop followers, it linked BTS’ blockbuster Bay Area run to one of the most painful — and eventually strangely funny — chapters in Korean pop culture history.
Tablo, whose legal name is Daniel Lee, attended Stanford before becoming one of South Korea’s most influential rappers. In 2010, he became the target of an online harassment campaign that falsely claimed he had lied about earning his Stanford degrees.
Stanford officials confirmed at the time that Lee had earned both a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in English.
“I still don’t understand this national phenomenon, where for two years all of Korea was fixated on me and my identity,” Tablo told the Chronicle in 2022.
As part of a 2010 MBC documentary, “Tablo Goes to Stanford,” meant to put the rumors to rest, the singer returned to the campus and sat near a group of trees by Meyer Green. Overwhelmed by the ordeal, he broke down in tears.
Fans later began referring to the location as the “Crying Tree,” a shorthand for the toll the conspiracy theory took on Tablo and his family.
Last year, Epik High members Mithra Jin and DJ Tukutz brought Tablo back to Stanford for a YouTube video and coaxed him into recreating the moment with a comic twist. In a later video with RM and Suga, Tablo urged the BTS members to visit the spot during their Stanford concerts.
RM appears to have taken the assignment seriously. In the photo posted Monday, May 18, he wore a dark outfit and backpack that echoed Tablo’s original image, turning a once-painful Stanford landmark into a knowing tribute between two generations of Korean music stars.
Risa Hontiveros seemed to be the only senator who took the time to genuinely appreciate the ensemble performing before the Senate plenary. Mabuhay ka, Sen @risahontiveros! 👏🏼
JV REJOINS MINORITY
Sen. JV Ejercito also joins the Senate minority bloc, following Sen. Migz Zubiri’s declaration to rejoin.
Ejercito also said that Senate President Alan Peter Cayetano had offered him the role as majority leader but declined.
“I was offered to become the majority leader but as I have mentioned to you personally that as of this time I would rather maintain my independence.”

Taehyun shared that RM from bts said these words to him!
"God gives people trials that fit their capacity.' Even if I'm facing a very difficult situation right now, it's because I'm a person with the capacity to face it that I've been given that trial. It was very encouraging. Whenever I hear special, moving words, I make a note of important keywords on my smartphone, and I've saved these words as well."
