A lone rider pauses before dark water, beneath a mountain lit at its summit.
It quietly says: the world around you is vast and difficult,
But something in you still wants to cross. https://t.co/pJwKb30tqK
this deal will go down as one of the most landmark and strategic move in the AI race.
not just in terms of valuation but oss , local ai , and the even future of nvidia!
save it.
a lot of discourse around growth, but most of us don’t really understand what “growth” actually means, here are two cents on all things "growth"
there are multiple layers to it -
1/ strategy + positioning + narratives
this is about figuring out the what and why.
- what are we talking about?
- who are we talking to?
- what problem are we solving for them?
- why should they care?
- how are we different?
- what narratives do we want to own?
it also includes:
- the larger plan around launches, campaigns and recurring distribution channels
- planning outreach loops
- deciding which channels to experiment with: twitter, linkedin, instagram, reddit, cold outreach, etc.
- organic vs inorganic: founder-led, ugc, influencers, ads
- deciding what outcomes to optimize for: awareness, views, traffic, sign-ups, demo calls, revenue, etc.
2/ product × marketing
- this is where growth gets built into the product itself
- identifying product loops that can bring in more users
improving activation, retention and referrals
- using product insights to improve targeting and messaging
- working with marketing to shape better narratives based on how users actually behave
this usually becomes more powerful once you have enough users and data to work with
3/ execution
this is about actually getting shit done.
- working with teams or agencies to produce creatives and content
- running launch campaigns and amplification
- closing and managing influencers
- building and running outreach flows
- setting up ads
- publishing, iterating and scaling what works
4/ roles
> growth lead - owns the broader growth strategy, priorities, experiments and outcomes
> content marketer/content strategist
decides/writes/creates/scripts what content should exist, who it is for and how it ladders up to larger narratives
> influencer marketer - finds, negotiates with and manages creators or influencers to drive distribution
> performance marketer -uses paid channels to acquire users and improve metrics like CAC, ROAS and conversion
> content creator - actually makes the content: videos, posts, graphics, scripts, etc
> content writer - actually writes copy and cotnent
> gtm engineer - uses data, automation and software to build scalable distribution and outreach systems
> ugc engineer - builds systems around sourcing, producing, testing and scaling ugc-style content
> growth product manager - works on product changes specifically designed to improve acquisition, activation, retention or monetization
> growth ops - builds the processes, tooling, tracking and operational systems that keep growth running.
> growth intern - everything and anything that is hard for older folks to execute/do
at early-stage startups, these roles are usually free-flowing
the person doing influencer outreach might also be writing content, talking to users and coming up with campaign ideas
the founder might be doing positioning in the morning, writing tweets in the afternoon and setting up ads at night
as companies get bigger, these roles become more specialized because the funnels, channels and loops are better understood
someone doing influencer outreach can say they’re “doing growth” and someone coming up with campaign ideas can also say they’re “doing growth” - and technically, they’re not wrong.
but imo, growth isn’t one job - it’s a spectrum of roles across strategy, product and execution, all trying to answer one question -
how do we systematically get more of the right people to discover, use and keep using what we’re building?
you know what. you are all alone.
read that again. even if it makes you uncomfortable. read it. absorb it. earlier it is. the better. and no it's not about gf-bf relations at all of specifically about it.
relationships in general.
