I watched a Dan Koe video for the first time in months:
āHow to build a better personal brand than 99% of people.ā
And I - whoāve been a die-hard fan of Dan Koe:
Disagreed with almost everything he said.
I just kept thinking:
āThis all sounds good in theory, but doesnāt work in practise.ā
āAnd how the fuck do you know that?ā You may ask.
Because I followed it
For months
And made no progress
Iāve seen others follow it
For months
Making no progress
It was only after I STOPPED following his advice and founded my own methods that I started:
⬦ Growing an engaged audience
⬦ Getting flooded by people in the DMs asking me for advice
⬦ Making money
This is because thereās a fundamental flaw in what Dan preaches:
āPost about all your interestsā
āPost about all your ideas but from your perspectiveā
āYouāll attract like-minded peopleā
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
You wonāt attract anyone with that.
BECAUSE YOUR BRAND IS ALL OVER THE PLACE.
This advice is like putting all foods you think taste good:
⬦ Steak
⬦ Fries
⬦ Ice cream
⬦ Cake
⬦ Tomatoes
⬦ Chocolate
⬦ Garlic sauce
Into a blender, mixing it up, and serving it to people.
Absolutely no one will like that.
Absolutely no one will understand what the fuck theyāre consuming.
Just like no one will understand your brand if you post about everything that interests you.
And if they donāt understand what youāre about:
They CANāT resonate with you
So youāll attract no one
And you wonāt grow
You see this all the time on X:
99% of die-hard Dan Koe fans that follow his advice are losing - hard:
⬦ Theyāve stayed at the same audience size for months
⬦ They barely get engagement on their posts
⬦ Theyāre not making any money
Because they āfollow their interestsā and post about everything.
Dan Koe doesnāt even practice his advice himself:
⬦ He doesnāt post about everything that interests him
⬦ He has a few core ideas that he consistently hammers again and again in his content
⬦ And if he ever posts about something else than these few core ideas, he always ties it back to them
And this is what ALL successful creators are doing:
⬦ They have a few, core, contrarian ideas that differentiate them from everyone else
⬦ They hammer these in over and over again all over their brand
⬦ They tie all their content back to these core ideas
This makes them memorable
It makes them occupy mental real estate
And itās the foundation of growing an engaged audience
So:
If you actually want to be successful with personal branding - like Dan Koe, do this:
--------- I ---------
1) Define your content topics
What's your goal with your brand? (what do you want to achieve with it?)
What do you need to be known for to reach that goal?
There are your content topics.
For me:
One of my goals with my brand is that I want to hit $50k/month before turning 25 be helping people with their personal brands.
To reach those goals, I need to be known as the personal brand expert.
So I need to post about personal branding, simple.
(I have other goals and 1-2 other content topics, but Iām only showing one for simplicityās sake)
--------- II ---------
2) Define your Differentiation Pillars within these topics
So within these topics, what are your unique/controversial ideas that are fundamentally different from your competitionās?
For me, itās that having an ENGAGED audience is the most important metric in personal branding, and thatās what you should optimise for.
IMPORTANT:
Have MAX 3 main topics and 3 differentiation pillars you post about.
This is to keep your brand coherent, easy to understand, and strong.
If you want to post about something else, do it with no more than 20% of your content and try to always tie it back to these topics and diff pillars.
--------- III ---------
3) GO FUCKING CRAZY WITH THIS
Now, your goal is simple:
Post about your differentiation pillars so much that itās impossible not to associate you with them.
This makes you take up space in peopleās minds - āoccupy mental real estateā if you wish, which is the first step to growing an engaged audience.
See what I did there?
Tied it back to my diff pillar.
In almost all my content related to personal branding, I somehow tie it back to this āengaged audienceā thing.
And I believe thatās one of the reasons I have such an engaged audience.
This is the foundation of successful branding.
Te videbo in summo.
