We hire teachers based on their strengths but then we manage them based on their weaknesses. This is a morale buster. Leaders, help them develop those strengths this new year and watch them excel.
Admin after this year, itβs ok to include more jean days next year! Make them spirit days if it makes you feel better. The students wonβt riot, and parents arenβt going to think less of the teachers. But your teachers will appreciate it and you! But don't charge them.
Teaching is the only profession where you have to put on a "Dog and Pony show" to show you're a professional. Formal Teacher evals need to go away. Informal evals with proper support as needed is what's needed.
If students aren't in school, then teachers should be able to teach from home. 42% of people work from home, yet teachers are expected to go to an empty school to teach? School districts, trust your professionals!
Teachers are 6 times more engaged and effective when they feel like they are valued, supported, and appreciated. Sadly Gallup also reports that 7 out of 10 teachers are not emotionally connected or theyβre dissatisfied at work. Districts have to do better.
I worry about the validity of formal evaluations right now. How can anyone accurately assess teachers w/ all the variables associated w/ learning that are beyond their control. The focus should be on what do you need & how can we support you during these unprecedented times.

Superintendents, whether school is in person or online, focus on staff morale. The adjustments/transitions over the past few months & now this fall are incredible. And donβt just focus on morale but their mental & emotional health too. Teachers need to feel safe and supported.
Finland's school day is ~ 5hours, with an hour of recess included. Wouldn't it be great if we moved more to that model, especially with all the recommendations/ limitations placed on the classroom this fall. Students should NOT sit in a classroom for 7+ hours.
Do you wonder if teachers/ principals are left out of the big picture ed conversation because if the public found out they are the real experts, people would realize politicians, boards, & some district positions aren't that important or even necessary in educational decisions.
Teachers love when students leave notes or drawings of appreciation. Teaches love when admin leave these notes of appreciation as well. They help refill their cups!
