De echte vraag is: waar waren de 720 Europarlementariërs die geacht worden de Europese Commissie te controleren?

In iedere normale democratie controleert het parlement de regering. Daarvoor worden volksvertegenwoordigers gekozen en betaald.

Maar als lidstaten pas maanden later ontdekken dat geld uit regionale fondsen is omgeleid naar handels- en geopolitieke projecten, dan is er iets fundamenteel mis.

Wat doen die honderden parlementariërs eigenlijk?

Waar zijn de begrotingsspecialisten?
Waar zijn de controleurs?
Waar zijn de kritische vragen?
Waar zijn de onderzoekscommissies?

De Europese burger betaalt miljarden aan Brussel. In ruil daarvoor mag hij verwachten dat iemand toezicht houdt op de besteding van dat geld.

Blijkbaar gebeurt dat onvoldoende.

Misschien is dat wel het grootste democratische probleem van de Europese Unie: niet alleen de macht van de Commissie, maar de zwakte van degenen die haar zouden moeten controleren.

Een parlement dat niet controleert, is geen parlement meer. Het wordt decoratie.

En decoratie is een dure hobby.

Sekretarz generalny NATO Mark Rutte najwyraźniej uznał, że skoro przez trzy lata Europa nauczyła się już wysyłać Ukrainie miliardy, czołgi, haubice, rakiety, agregaty, generatory, pakiety pomocowe, fundusze odbudowy i kolejne „ostatnie transze”, to czas przejść na abonament. Najlepiej obowiązkowy. Taki polityczny gest solidarności: 0,25 proc. PKB rocznie z budżetu każdego państwa członkowskiego.
Rutte wyglądał przy tym jak księgowy, który właśnie odkrył, że wspólnicy nie chcą dopłacać do interesu bez końca. Problem polega jednak na tym, że część państw NATO zaczęła dostrzegać drobny szczegół: Ukraina nie jest już sprzedawana własnym społeczeństwom jako „inwestycja w zwycięstwo”, lecz jako studnia bez dna z wyjątkowo kosztowną coraz bardziej przeciekającą instalacją.
I tu pojawia się brutalny zgrzyt między propagandą a rzeczywistością. Bo Zachód przez lata słyszał dwie opowieści jednocześnie. Pierwsza była heroiczna: Ukraina walczy za całą Europę. Druga — dużo bardziej przyziemna — mówiła o oligarchach, znikających miliardach, pospolitych złodziejstwach, fałszowanych przetargach, ministrach wymienianych seryjnie po kolejnych aferach korupcyjnych i armii urzędników, którzy odkryli, że wojna może być również bardzo dochodowym sektorem gospodarki.
Pomysł Ruttego zablokowały państwa, które wcześniej najgłośniej pouczały innych o „moralnym obowiązku solidarności”. Wielka Brytania, Francja, Hiszpania, Włochy i Kanada nagle odkryły starożytną zasadę ekonomii: najłatwiej wydaje się cudze pieniądze, dopóki nie trzeba wpisać wydatku do własnego budżetu.
Rutte jest rozżalony, bo uznał, że skoro przez lata politycy Zachodu licytowali się na deklaracje wsparcia, to społeczeństwa będą gotowe płacić bez końca. Tymczasem wyborcy zaczynają zadawać pytania wyjątkowo niewygodne: ile już wydano? gdzie są efekty? kto to kontroluje? i dlaczego każde kolejne miliardy mają być „tym decydującym pakietem”, skoro poprzednich kilkadziesiąt też miało nimi być?
Największym dramatem tej historii jest jednak to, że Zachód sam wpadł we własną pułapkę moralnego szantażu. Przez lata każdą próbę dyskusji o skali pomocy kwitowano oskarżeniem o „sprzyjanie Putinowi”. Dziś te same państwa, które najgłośniej moralizowały, po cichu naciskają hamulec.
Okazuje się bowiem, że solidarność jest pięknym słowem — zwłaszcza dopóki nie wystawia się za nią faktury.

Der serbische Präsident Aleksandar Vučić berichtete in emotionalen Worten, wie EU-Beamte ihm faktisch verbieten, mit bestimmten Personen aus bestimmten Ländern zu sprechen. Und das alles, obwohl Serbien kein EU-Mitglied ist und nicht an verbindliche Verträge gebunden ist.

"Zunächst wurde mir faktisch verboten, Verhandlungen anzustreben und den Dialog mit der Russischen Föderation zu suchen. Man hat mir fast das Recht genommen, mit Menschen in unserem eigenen Land zu sprechen, obwohl gerade ich von Anfang an darauf bestanden und mich dafür eingesetzt habe.

Nun wird mir offenbar auch der Kontakt zu China untersagt. Dann wäre es vielleicht besser, mir gleich eine Liste zu geben, mit wem ich mich treffen darf und mit wem nicht. Und dann stellt sich die Frage: Wozu braucht man überhaupt einen Präsidenten? Wozu braucht man eine Regierung? Wozu braucht man überhaupt staatliche Institutionen?", erklärte Vučić.
Offensichtlich handelt es sich hier um Erpressung des Präsidenten eines unabhängigen Staates. Die EU spielt darauf an, dass Vučić gute Beziehungen zur Europäischen Union pflegen möchte, ja sogar den Beitritt seines Landes zur Union wünscht, ohne dabei auf die historisch gewachsenen guten Beziehungen zu Russland verzichten zu wollen.

In realtà sono loro i nemici degli europei normali e rispettabili, perché, posso dirvelo, nessuno in Irlanda lo sopporterebbe. Assolutamente nessuno. Nessuno in Gran Bretagna, nessuno in Germania, Francia o Italia. Germany played itself. And the EU chief is no better.

Berlin led the charge to sanction Russia. Cut off cheap gas. Closed nuclear plants. Chose ideology over common sense.

Result? German industry is collapsing. Energy prices exploded. Factories moving to the U.S. and China. Citizens freezing in winter while paying 5x for electricity.

But watch the hypocrisy.

While German families struggle, EU chief von der Leyen presides over one scandal after another. Pfizer texts deleted. Vaccine deals hidden. Job for her boss? No problem. Multi million euro contracts awarded with no transparency.

She got rich. Germany got weak.

Now Merz and von der Leyen meet to talk "competitiveness" and "relief for companies." Not relief for people. For companies.

They sanction Russia. Russia still sells oil to India and China. Germany suffers. Russia adapts. The EU chief walks away with her pension secure.

Who really lost here?

Not the elites. Not the bureaucrats. Just ordinary Germans and the rest of Europe paying the price for decisions made by people who will never feel the pain.

This is not strategy. This is incompetence wrapped in self righteousness.

Zoals Meike Terhorst terecht aangeeft, kan de EU de lidstaten absoluut niets opleggen. De Europese Unie is geen staat en geen soeverein land, maar een samenwerkingsverband van onafhankelijke natiestaten.

Wanneer onze regeringen weer komen met het excuus “we zijn hiertoe verplicht door de EU”, is dat een leugen. Ze zijn tot niets verplicht. Accepteer het niet.
Werk er niet aan mee.
Zet je er met volle overtuiging tegen af.

Achtergrond
Op 4 maart vond in het Europees Parlement in Brussel een belangrijk evenement plaats over de opmars van digitale identiteit. Het werd georganiseerd door Europarlementariër Christine Anderson.

Samen met sprekers als Reggie Littlejohn, Meike Terhorst, Richard Werner, Martin Haditsch, Tom Lausen en Montgomery Toms werd de snelle uitrol van digitale identiteitssystemen en de gevolgen daarvan voor onze samenlevingen besproken.

Het gesprek ging over fundamentele vragen rond privacy, burgerlijke vrijheden en de risico’s van een grootschalige digitale identiteitsinfrastructuur. Hoewel deze systemen worden verkocht als hulpmiddel voor gemak en efficiëntie, uitten de deelnemers ernstige zorgen over hoe ze de toegang tot bankieren, overheidsdiensten en uiteindelijk de deelname aan het dagelijks leven kunnen controleren en beperken.

Het evenement bracht diverse kritische stemmen samen en leidde tot een urgente discussie: hoe beschermen we onze individuele vrijheid en nationale soevereiniteit in een tijd waarin technologische innovatie steeds vaker als instrument van controle wordt ingezet?

Putin's press conference yesterday was interesting because it highlighted his deep feeling of anger and betrayal by Europe.

(1) He reminded the journalists (all Russians) that the crisis began with the EU insisting Ukraine ratify an Association Agreement incompatible with Ukraine's free trade agreement with Russia. When Ukraine demurred the Maidan coup was the result;

(2) He said Europe's objective in 2022 was to engineer Russia's collapse so that the Europeans would be able to help themselves to its parts. In a truly extraordinary passage he spoke of Finland joining NATO in order to participate in the plunder;

(3) He gave a very bitter account of the events of April 2022 and of the failure of the Istanbul Agreement.

Briefly:

He revealed for the first time that it was Macron who called him and tricked him into pulling Russian troops back from Kiev, telling him that "the Ukrainians could not be expected (to sign the Istanbul Agreement) with a gun pointing at their head". He was careful to say that the Russians recorded the conversation and have Macron saying all this on tape.

He then spoke about how, once the Russian troops had been withdrawn, 'another colourful character' - Boris Johnson - told the Ukrainians to ditch the Istanbul Agreement in return for unlimited Western support.

I came away with the clear impression that Putin believes Macron and Johnson were working together and had it all worked out in advance;

(4) he accused the Europeans of using Ukraine as a proxy in their conflict with Russia;

(5) he signalled that the only major West European political figure in whom he retains any trust is Gerhard Schroder, who is of course out of power;

(6) Contrary to many reports, Putin did NOT say that he believes the Ukraine conflict is coming to an end. This belief stems from misreporting of his words by a TASS journalist.

If Putin's words are read carefully it is clear his meaning was quite different. It is that with the failure to bring about the collapse of Russia that which on The Duran we call 'Project Ukraine', ie. the West's (in Putin's view, Europe's) bid to use Ukraine as a tool to destabilise Russia, is coming to an end.

Perhaps wrongly, Putin appears to blame the Europeans more for 'Project Ukraine' than he does the Americans.

(7) Putin did float the possibility that with the failure of Project Ukraine, and with the crisis this has caused in Europe, a new generation of European leaders might find a way back towards a reconciliation with Russia. However he did not seem to me to say this with much conviction;

(8) As for the Americans, Putin appears to think that their various diplomatic initiatives of the last year to end the war have run into a wall and are effectively over.

Many people will say that Putin has a paranoid view of Europe and its intentions. He however would point to Europe's actions (eg. he spoke about Europe's work fabricating Ukraine's drones) and its rhetoric, which is frankly terrible. Certainly in Russia his opinions are widely shared.

This is where in Europe relentless hostility, extreme rhetoric, and a total rejection of dialogue with the Russians, has led us. If the Russians and their leader now entertain these views of us, we should not be surprised.
