today we had our first full lockdown drill since uvalde. my high schoolers and i talked about how to create makeshift bullet proof vests with backpacks, tables, and mini whiteboards. this is the reality and quite frankly, not what i signed up for.
20 years ago, a man tried to let off explosives hidden in his shoes on a plane, they never detonated, no deaths. To this day, we are made to take off our shoes before boarding a flight.
Since 1999, there have been 300+ school shootings. 180+ deaths and nothing has changed.
To ask teachers to be on the front line of mass shootings, the front line of a pandemic, and the front line of the struggle against inequality all while underpaying them and systematically underfunding the education system is both cruel and a recipe for societal collapse.
