Youth sports in the US are a disaster driven by egos & money.
70% of kids drop out of sports by 13
Fear of failure & pressure to perform from parents & coaches is one of the biggest reasons
We need to do better
Here's my youth sports manifesto for parents. It's important:
Former NBL star Jamahl Mosley has been named the @NBA's Eastern Conference Coach of the Month 👏
The ex-Victoria Titan led the @OrlandoMagic to a 13-5 record across the first month of the NBA season 💪
Here's Jerome Tang on why Will McNair didn't play. Sounds like a decision unrelated to his on-court performance.
"I can't live with myself if I just use [our players] to win games and then they go off from here and can't be productive citizens and great husbands and great fathers."
@OrlandoMagic have won 9 consecutive games.
They’ve got the 3rd best record in the NBA.
Hey man..opponents better stay off Church St the night before games. No more 36 holes of golf before scooping a dub for visiting teams.
Better ask somebody💯
Here are a few of my initial observations after spending the morning with Coach Oats and the Alabama men’s basketball team:
EVERYTHING matters here… every… single… detail is important. They understand that little things done consistently generate BIG results.
EVERYTHING is measured/recorded:
*Each player’s heart rate, mileage coverage, and calories expended
*What time each player enters the practice facility
*How much film each player watches on their own
EVERYTHING is organized. Nothing is haphazard. Their film breakdown and practice plan were hyper-focussed and precise.
EVERYTHING is intentional and is part of the bigger picture and process required to win a National Championship.
EVERYTHING in practice is timed, filmed, and monitored. Every drill matters. Every shot taken matters. “How you do anything is how you do everything.”
Kelvin Sampson on young people maturing
“The first step on the ladder of success is always failure. Immature people don’t deal well with failure and immature people don’t understand that there is going to be failure.”

Virginia’s Tony Bennett is regarded as one of the top coaches in college basketball — winning his 400th game on Saturday and a National Championship in 2019.
How has he built a truly elite culture?
With 5 unique program pillars that we can apply to our own lives:
You’re negative because you practice being negative.
You’re nervous because you practice being nervous.
You’re worried because you practice being worried.
If you want to be calm, confident and positive, practice being those things on purpose.
You get good at what you practice.
