And I also love realistic & unique styles in picture books. Jan Brett, Chris Van Allsburg, Tomie de Paola, Steven Kellogg, Olivier Dunrea, etc. Problem today is many children’s book artists don’t make an effort simply because “it’s just for kids.” Kids deserve excellence, too.

As someone who reads lots of picture books for my job, I can attest to the fact that there is a lot of garbage out there these days, both in art quality & story. But Eric Carle blends patterns & shapes & colors, resulting in a whimsy that most young children imagine themselves.
