No more beating around the bush. The whole theatre is orchestrated by the Oromo dominated Ethiopian government which is sworn to displace Orthodox Christendom and Amharas from what is claimed Oromo fief. Protestant worship to which the PM belongs remains untouched. Had the prime instigators were Muslim extrimists,they would also have gone after Protestants as well.

No doubt Colonialism left terrible footmarks. But it also opened up eyes to modern ways of living and and thinking.

Eritrea, which was part of Ethiopia, fell under Italian rule for few decades. When the Italians were kicked out after WWII, Eritrea had modern cities, industries and even a parliament which did not exist in the motherland.

After the two reunited, the systemic contradictions were so irreconcilable the union failed and Eritrea broke away after a protracted civil war. I can’t say say Eritreans are better off since then because of poor governance.

Ethiopia was never colonized.

For much of its history, it was one of the poorest countries on the continent.

Meanwhile, Vietnam was colonized by the French, devastated by decades of war, and is now on its way to serious economic prosperity.

If colonialism were the answer to why Africa is poor, Ethiopia should be rich and Vietnam should be broke. Neither is true.

@MatthewStadlen, the word "Islamophobia" has a more revealing origin than its current defenders acknowledge. It was coined by Iranian fundamentalists in the late 1970s specifically to place Islam beyond criticism by declaring anyone who questions it a racist. It was then popularised in British political discourse through the 1997 Runnymede Trust report launched by Labour Home Secretary Jack Straw. Its purpose then and now is identical. To place criticism of Islam and its political manifestations beyond legitimate public debate by framing such criticism as a form of racism comparable to antisemitism.

The distinction is an important one. Antisemitism is hatred of Jews as a people. It targets an ethnicity. Islamophobia as currently deployed is used to shut down legitimate criticism of an ideology, a set of beliefs, a political and legal framework that in many of its manifestations is incompatible with the liberal democratic values this country was built on. Criticising sharia law is not hatred of Muslims. Documenting the role of political Islam in grooming gang networks is not hatred of Muslims. Naming the ideology that produced the October 7th massacre is not hatred of Muslims.

The Policy Exchange poll published this month found that 25 percent of British Muslims have a favourable view of Hamas. It also found that 45 percent believe Jews control the media and 39 percent believe Jews control Parliament. Those are antisemitic conspiracy theories with no basis in fact. The poll documents not their truth but their prevalence. The fact that such beliefs are held by significant proportions of a specific community is precisely the public policy conversation the word Islamophobia is designed to prevent.

Reform's argument is not that Muslims should face hatred or discrimination. It is that an ideological construct designed to silence legitimate scrutiny of a specific belief system should not carry the same legal and social weight as genuine racial hatred. That is not disgusting. That is a distinction any serious journalist should be capable of making.

The word that is actually being used to mislead the public is the one you are defending.

It’s not that Africa lacks the resources, talent, or resilience to withstand economic shocks. The tragedy is that too many tyrants and their cronies are busy looting national wealth, enriching themselves, and pouring scarce public resources into vanity projects that do little to improve the lives of ordinary citizens.

Popular protest that is being ignited in places like #Kenya on account of fuel price escalation is bound to spread all over Africa including #Ethiopia where poverty has reached unbearable level.

No amount of wish or declaration of intent will attract, let alone coerce, investment capital to flow to Africa before Africa practice the rule of law and provide the requisite conditions for FCI to thrive.

There is also actionable plan in US & eventually in Europe which doesn’t favor developing countries. West seems determined to reduce dependence on imported goods. It is possible now that AI and humanoid robotics can cut cost of production dramatically.

When their fraudulent narratives are challenged, the true nature of the left emerges in an explosion of total wrath and hatred. The radical left is a movement defined by political violence and lawlessness. During the 2020 BLM riots, progressive leaders explicitly cheered on mobs that caused over 2 billion dollars in property damage and terrorized innocent citizens. They weaponize the Department of Justice to persecute political opponents, completely subverting the rule of law to maintain their tyrannical grip on society.

Leftism offers no redemption, only an endless cycle of regret and social ruin. It is a civilizational suicide pact that transforms prosperous nations into crime-ridden, bankrupt wastelands. Progressive cities like San Francisco and Chicago serve as living monuments to this leftist damnation, where multi-million-dollar homeless budgets produce nothing but open-air drug markets, needles on the pavement, and economic collapse.
