#HappeningNow The Zimbabwe Council of Churches is co-convening a side session on Critical Reflections on Resource-Backed Financing, Debt Sustainability and Mineral Governance on the sidelines of the Zimbabwe Alternative Mining Indaba #zami2026. The session featured Dr Gorden Moyo, who unpacked how Zimbabwe's mineral wealth has failed to translate into fiscal justice, citing the country's debt burden and weak accountability over mining revenue as well as a lack of a collective position as Africa in engaging the global North. @ZIMCODD1 Executive Director John P. Maketo presented a comparative study of Zimbabwe, Zambia, Mozambique, Angola, South Africa and Namibia which showed resource-backed loans becoming a regional trend, with opaque deal-making mortgaging future mineral earnings, underscoring the session's core call for transparent, accountable mineral governance that puts citizens ahead of creditors.

“Debt must never become more important than people.”
Those were the powerful reflections shared by @jmaketo, Executive Director of ZIMCODD, as he opened the 8th Zimbabwe Annual Public Debt Conference.
In his address, he challenged stakeholders to rethink sovereign debt management through the lenses of justice, sovereignty and people’s dignity, emphasizing that public debt is not merely an economic issue, but one of governance, democracy, development and human rights.
As the conference continues, these reflections set the tone for meaningful dialogue on building a debt management system that puts people at the centre of development.

In case you have been wondering how Zimbabwe’s debt affect you, this is what Dr Sillah said in his session on Unpacking the Link between Debt, Inequality and the Extractives, “Debt lead to diversion of resources from social needs like education, health and social amenities.”
Equal sharing of Zimbabwe's resources is a must! Reverend Cele stresses that corruption and mismanagement lead to poverty, as resources meant for all end up in the hands of a few.
