-“According to official sources, work on the helipad at the Pramadam Indoor Stadium had been completed only a few hours before the presidential flight arrived. Initially, the President was scheduled to land at Nilackal, but in consideration of the inclement weather conditions prevailing in the region, the plan was changed at the last minute. The stranded helicopter was later pushed out of the soft surface by police and Fire and Rescue Services personnel”
Extract from the news.
- Whenever the VIP travels to any specific helipad , there is a trial landing carried out. This trial landing needs to happen almost 48 plus in advance. The arrangements are checked by the Capt and all associated personnel from civil administration are available at the helipad. An officer from IAF is also available on the helipad with his / her team of Met personnel and ATC personnel. The Officer would have ensured that minimum standards of safety and security are met.Only after the Officer is convinced about the preparations that the helicopter can land at helipad.
- This trial landing report is passed on to appropriate authorities and then the main flight is cleared.
- In the above given case it appears that the location of helipad was changed due to operational/ weather conditions reasons. In such a case the preparations will not be affected at all however the preparations may have been a done in time constraint.
- Another aspect that needs to be understood is that after the helicopter lands there may be a situation wherein a little of “ tar “
around skids/ wheels may get dislodged. There is a high probability that this “ dislodgement “ may take place when the “ Tar “ is not sufficiently dry / firm.
- In summary ,I may say “ Tne appropriate authorities will surely ensure that such situations are not encountered again. Possible changes in SOP and other aspects will follow. Be rest assured that Pilots who are given such responsibilities are vetted/ trained/ assessed through a panel of approvals. There is sufficient Staff at Command / HQ level who are totally involved in such high importance flights.I have knowledge and have been part of such missions, and all I can say with conviction it’s a “high pressure mission “

- I am part of many professional groups which are into many areas of business.
- It’s been 10 days that India as a country has been tackling challenges and making plans to counter the adversary.
- What surprises me : not on a single group , there is even a mention “Good luck to the Armed Forces “
- The professionals in these groups are very learned , highly intelligent and have a deep understanding about human behaviour.
- Areey motivation and morale ki samaj hain toh kabhi toh bolo” We are proud of our Armed Forces , go on boys keep the josh high “
- Here I call out all facilitators , coaches and all those who I observe.
Never ever forget :”Someone somewhere is standing guard so that each one of us can conduct intelligent conversations which bring about change”
PS: Not just an observation: a valid frustration.

P.N: This scene is only a representative of what happened in Pahalgam. In fact, the reality has been more traumatic, and the nation should feel the pain and trauma!
Well done @hvtiaf_bharat .
So proud of you.
@ShivAroor each generation in @IAF_MCC has two sets of professional role models. One set is one which is senior by 10- 15 years ( like your instructor/ Flt Cdr / CO)
Another set is close course ( 2-6 course upar)
For our generation @hvtiaf_bharat is that super professional from second set.
An outright brilliant professional who is way ahead of his times, not today but always.
Good luck HVT

Some facts that may help readers understand how the traffic in India is decongested.
- Let us take the example of Mumbai ( VABB) and Juhu (VAJJ ) the closest helicopter operating base from VABB.
- Any helicopter which comes into Mumbai has a fixed corridor to enter into Mumbai and a fixed corridor to leave Mumbai
- Let me explain with help of a route : Oxford helipad ( near #pune ) Juhu - Oxford helipad.
- Once I take off from Oxford I will report at a particular point as defined ( it’s 260/15 from pune ) thereafter I will follow route as follows 260/15 PPN - Panvel - RCP( Reliance Corporate park ) - Vihar North - 26 base - Juhu finals.
- When I take off from Juhu, I will follow route Juhu - Vihar South - DAKC ( Dhirubhai Ambani Knowledge City ) - Karnala Fort - 260/20 from PPN.
- As you see the traffic going to Mumbai and one coming from Mumbai is separated geographically. It is also separated vertically as the heights to be maintained are different.
- Now all of this is not open to interpretation or discussion: all this is given as Kilo routes and heptr traffic has to follow it to the “T”
- Once we understand that this is how heptr traffic is separated out let us see how the fixed wing and helicopter Is decongested.
- The route I explained above is for helicopter to follow when runway at Mumbai is 09/27. At a certain place near / short of RCP , you will see fixed wing on finals for 27 above you. The height is different for each type and hence it is automatically separated. ( helicopter is at 1200 or 1000 feet ) fixed wing on approach is definitely higher.
- Now let’s say the RW at Mumbai changes to 14/32 then the helicopters which are incoming and outgoing follow the coast upto Mahalaxmi Race Course and from close to bhau cha Dhaka go to Karnala and then to #pune.
- Let us now understand RT channels : when I am 25 miles inbound ,Mumbai asks me to change over and maintain with Juhu ATC. It does so as it is sure that I will fly a fixed corridor and fixed height . I have no other choice and when I follow the Kilo route I am automatically vertically separated from fixed wing hence Mumbai may not want to be disturbed with helicopters ( low flying machines )
- Mumbai / Pune route and kilo routes have been active for a decade or so now and other places such as Nagpur etc also have these routes.
- These routes are tested first on paper / well thought out by AAI / DGCA and then few trials are done by operators. The safety assessment is vetted at appropriate level and then these get published.
- As is emerging from the analysis that I am following on various channels : the American Airlines fixed wing changed its course to make good finals for another runway ( on approval / instruction ) from ATC. The helicopter was told to establish contact ( which it did as per reports ) and the helicopter was asked to cross behind the aircraft. The helicopter ( as per reports) acknowledged that.
- One will have to wait for the investigation to conclude what exactly happened.
- It is indeed sad and tragic that so many lives are lost. Sad day for Aviaiton.
