These are the facts about the US in Africa, shamefully so. We're not thinking big enough about Africa in the right ways.

All we do is talk about and fund "stuff". Programs to nurture and fund women, the 20-somethings who are "Africa's future", tech, vibes, B2B facilitation.

90% of Africans will never feel the impact of our usual basket of goodies and if they do, they won't know it came from the USA.

The majority of what the US presents to Africa are laudable things, as it goes, in the soft-power arsenal of any superpower that would claim the mantel of "our way is great!".

Yet, it's key that all of the above is coupled with doing hard tangible projects on the ground. Infrastructure funded and built by American companies that has immediate impact on peoples lives, that will still be standing in 75 years.

Go finish LAPSSET, for free. Build a highway that'll last for 30 years, using the Western latest technology that hold up to extreme conditions. And not just to Juba, but all the way to the Central African Republic border. Build all the border crossings and every other bit of surrounding infrastructure needed to run primary regional highway. Start an East African school of highway engineering and construction, fully US funded and staffed, which also includes training in use and maintenance heavy equipment. Sponsored by Caterpillar. This school would have students from all of Africa, with teaching in English, French, and Arabic. The knock on effects to the continent would be massive.

So simple, yet everyone in the US State Department wants to fund women's groups growing organic lettuce. Leave that to Dutch Aid.. America has a whole US Army Corp of Engineers that could be another tool of our soft-power. We've built big stuff. Why don't we build big stuff for Africa?

The US needs to fund programs and do big projects in Africa that can be done without taking into consideration the degree of adherence to "democratic ideals" of a specific country. PEPFAR is a good example of this. Everyone got PEPFAR, no matter how naughty they were.

Largely, infrastructure should be viewed the same. If a country is suffering because of a generational lack of connectivity to the world, we should still build it, even if there's a dictator in power. Mobility breeds prosperity, which breeds democracy.

America and the State Department can't see the forest for the trees in Africa.

Our influence in Africa will otherwise continue to wane as the Belt-Way African experts continue to feed their unimaginative, steamy glassed views and ideas about "what Africa actually needs" to an ever revolving cast of political characters in the legislative and foreign policy institutions of Washington, spun ever faster by our democratic system of governance.
