@rwidome As to the origin story I'm no insider but have heard some say it evolved out of how lucrative NIH grants have become for schools. If you can generate revenue through indirects and get faculty salaries subsidized, why foot the bill yourself?

@rwidome My understanding is that a division like ours is not technically soft. If we lost all our funding tomorrow, the division would still need to find a way to keep us on their payroll (though likely not without some grumbling). Vs contract faculty who have no comparable safety net.
