I entered IIT Delhi in General Category with high JEE rank, though I'm from Shudra/Dalit village (+ extreme poverty, hungry childhood). I topped my IIT batch. Went on to Massachusetts Institute of Technology, earning one of fastest PhD. Then entrepreneur, won numerous patents, etc.

For me, "advanced studies" books were like novels. Most of it felt simple, obvious. One read, I was done, most of the time.

@TrueIndology does not say that so-called OBC, SC or ST lack talent or cannot master a field. He says reservations can be cruel. That is true.

The IITs and similar schools of India put every student in the same room with the professors, in the same labs, under the same exams and the same grades. That room is a mirror. Reservations were meant to give a nineteen-year-old a chance against 1000+ years of presumed and unverifiable discrimination. What they give instead is a daily accounting of what he or she cannot do.

The misfits in an elite nest.

A boy or girl who might have thrived in a skill school becomes a depressed and angry engineer who cannot engineer.

India does not need caste reservations in a limited number of colleges. India needs to add colleges and vocational schools in every city, town, state and every territory—so many that any boy or girl can apply, get admission, learn, find the work that fits the hands and the mind, and grow to the full measure of what is in them.

did my https://t.co/zANOEvvHvH at IIT Bombay and my PhD at IIT Delhi. I've been a professor for 14 years now. In 22 years of watching the IIT/IIIT system closely, I have never once witnessed a teacher discriminate against a student on the basis of caste.

During my https://t.co/zANOEvvHvH, most of us had no idea what caste our batchmates belonged to. Many of my close friends were SC/ST. We never discussed it. It never entered any conversation or decision. Not once. Our exposure to the humanities department was limited, though — the term "Brahmanical patriarchy" didn't even exist back then.

As a teacher, I don't ask a student's name before solving their doubt. Often I don't know their name at all — some of my classes have 300+ students. We treat them all the same. So does every colleague I know. So did every professor who taught me.

Social media has now filled vulnerable students' heads with a lot of manufactured grievance about caste discrimination that, in my experience, doesn't exist.

Product ML/DS is very different from the glamorous theoretical ML. Purists struggle because they don't tune their expectations. It's a tough job because more often than not you have to switch roles between product, analytics, engineer, statistician, and a story teller. Youngster who want to be successful in this field, this realisation is very important.

Sadly Shekhar mob doesn’t think on such sane fine lines. All of us are part of the mob depending on our emotional state. Easier said during reflection.

Media has always known this nature of the world. If it feeds on mob’s emotions to make trp/money, it will have to take the brunt of mob’s anger as well. That’s the effect of taking sides.
