Located east of Cincy along the Ohio River, Coldstream sits on a beautiful piece of land and rolling hills that’s just perfect for a golf course.

As with many courses over time, Coldstream had become a victim to tree planting in the 70’s and 80’s. Wilson’s work was always about angles and strategy and those traits were lost as the holes had become one way corridors. The club sought to bring back the course’s original intent and hired golf course architect Keith Foster to do the work. That finished work is nothing short of spectacular.

After the tree removal had been completed, fairways were widened to original widths and the scale of the course was soon recaptured. Drainage work was completed, cart paths removed, and vistas across the course are present again.

What catches your eye at Coldstream are the classic puzzle piece shaped deep cavernous bunkers that guard both the fairways and original Wilson perched green complexes. Angles of play and strategy are back. Many of the greens sit at 30-45 degree angles making choices off the tee ever important. Coming in from the proper angle of approach are needed to get at pin locations that can get tucked. Miss the green and you’ll often find yourself short sided or in a deep bunker.

Because of the drainage work completed, the course plays firm and fast. Greens run at a very solid pace. You have choices off the tee to be more aggressive but if not accurate will often find you trouble as balls can run out into bunkers or deep rough.

Coldstream somehow flies under the radar in Ohio’s deep list of great courses. I’m kicking myself it took me this long to see it, but am so thrilled I finally did. This golf course should be on everyone’s list of must play venues.
