I don’t know what warped logic drove Putin to blow up a stationary Ukrainian locomotive on the Polish border this morning. What we can say for sure is that this is the kind of random and senseless attack Ukrainians are enduring every day - even on civilian railways. So far Putin has been responsible for the deaths of 1700 staff of Ukrzaliznytsia - Ukrainian Railways. They and their daily passengers are absolutely heroic.

When are we going to give them the air defences they need? Why won’t we unfreeze Putin’s cash and give it to Ukraine? There is more than €140 billion in a Belgian bank account - and about £10 billion in London. Britain could show a lead.

The Ukrainians are going to win - that much was clear from the last three days in their wonderful country. But we will get this dreadful war over much faster if we all get serious and give them what they need and deserve.

🇷🇴🧳Rumunia to chyba ostatnia, wciąż nieodkryta w naszym kraju perła turystyczna. I nie mówię o skali regionalnej, a co najmniej kontynentalnej. Europejskiej.

Rumunia ma wszystko. Przepiękną przyrodę, niebywałą, do tego zróżnicowaną i świetnie zachowaną (choć niekoniecznie odremontowaną) architekturę, światowej klasy zabytki, a nawet godne uwagi pozostałości pochodzące wprost ze starożytności (w tym z czasów starożytnego Rzymu). Do tego proponuje odwiedzającym ciekawą ofertę kulinarną i alkoholową (wina, palinki, piwa) oraz oczywiście oryginalną
kulturę i tradycję.

Zajmujące mniej więcej 1/3 kraju (sic!) Karpaty są oszałamiające. Po prostu. I mówię to bez cienia przesady. 🗻🚠

Przejazd trasą Transfogaraską czy Transalpiną to doświadczenie zapierające dech w piersiach. Delta Dunaju (wschodnia część kraju, niedaleko brzegów Morza Czarnego) to jeden z najwspanialszych rezerwatów przyrody na Starym Kontynencie. Świnoujścianom (takim jak ja) skojarzyć się ona może ze wsteczną deltą Świny, przy czym jest ona oczywiście znacznie, znacznie większa.

Znajdujący się na zachodnich rubieżach kraju – na pograniczu z Serbią, w dolinie Dunaju – Park Narodowy
Żelazna Brama to po prostu przyrodniczy cud świata. Ci, którzy mniej interesują się przyrodą, a bardziej np. inżynierią, zachwycą się tam choćby największą w kraju elektrownią wodną (jedną z wielkich inwestycji czasów komunistycznych).

🏰Fani klasycznych zabytków znajdą w tym kraju natomiast świetnie zachowane średniowieczne miasta (Sighișoara), majestatyczne zamki (stojący w Hunedoarze Zamek Korwinów to wyciągnięta wprost z legend arturiańskich czy powieści J.K. Rowling
średniowieczna twierdza, strzelająca w niebo ostrymi, smukłymi wieżami), unikalne kościoły warowne (na czele z Viscri), w których przed najazdami od XII w. bronili się mieszkający tam przez stulecia Sasi, czy też pozostałości rzymskich fortyfikacji z czasów wojen, jakie imperium prowadziło niecałe dwa milenia temu z żyjącymi na terenach dzisiejszej Rumunii Dakami. O dziesiątkach pomniejszych fortalicji i cytadel górujących nad siedmiogrodzkimi miastami i miasteczkami (takich jak Deva, Râșnov, Rupea czy Poenari), czy malowniczej zabudowie transylwańskich miasteczek nawet nie wspomnę.

Gotyckie katedry? ⛪️

A proszę bardzo. Czarny Kościół w Braszowie (który po niedawnej restauracji i oczyszczeniu jego ścian nie jest już, co prawda czarny) czy Kościół Świętego Michała w Klużu (stolicy Transylwanii) to dwa z wielu, naprawdę wielu przykładów tego stylu.

A może wolelibyście wypić kawę na rynku typowego, środkowoeuropejskiego miasta? W takim razie zapraszam do Sybina czy wspomnianego już Braszowa (tu w komplecie do kawy dostaniecie jeszcze widok na wzgórze Tâmpa, u którego stóp położone jest miasto). Miłośnicy nieco nowszej, ale liczącej sobie ponad sto lat architektury z końca XIX i początku XX w. rozpłyną się
nad art nouveau'owską zabudową Oradei (która po trwającym przez ostatnie kilkanaście lat remoncie rzuca na kolana) czy niezliczonymi, rozsianymi po całym kraju gmachami wzniesionymi w stylu rumuńskiego odrodzenia (stanowiącego brawurowe połączenie form bizantyjskich, osmańskich, późnorenesansowych i barokowych).

Do tych nowszych obiektów dodać trzeba też koniecznie pałac królewski w Sinai (a właściwie kompleks pałacowy, bo składa się on z dwóch kluczowych obiektów – Pałacu Peleș i stojącego nieopodal mniejszego pałacyku Pelișor). Fani turpistycznego brutalizmu i monumentalnego „socrealizmu” (w wersji karpackiej) zachwycą się architelturą dwumilionowego Bukaresztu. Dość wspomnieć choćby nie tylko o samym słynnym na cały świat Domu Ludu (czyli dzisiejszym Parlamencie Rumuńskim, będącym trzecim - a do niedawna drugim - największym gmachem administracyjnym świata, wzniesionym na polecenie Nicolae Ceaușescu), ale też o całym towarzyszącym mu założeniu architektonicznym na czele z Bulwarem Zjednoczenia, który miał swym rozmachem rzucić wyzwanie paryskim Polom Elizejskim.

Wszystko, co tu wymieniłem, to zaledwie początek.

Nie wspomniałem nawet jeszcze ani o największych w Europie wulkanach błotnych (we wschodniej, czy może środkowo-wschodniej Rumunii), wybrzeżu Morza
Czarnego, obfitujących w meczety tatarskich miastach i miasteczkach Dobrudży, ani chociażby o kopalni soli w Turdzie. Ta ostatnia nazywana jest niekiedy rumuńską Wieliczką, choć porównanie to nie jest do końca trafne. Obydwie kopalnie są bowiem klasą samą dla siebie i rywalizują (czy raczej wygrywają, bo trudno dla nich o konkurencję) w zupełnie innych kategoriach. O ile nasza solna perełka to pełna małych, misternych arcydzieł – rzeźb, płaskorzeźb, żyrandoli i komnat – podziemna katedra sztuki, to Turda jest po prostu gargantuicznym, przypominającym skryty głęboko pod powierzchnią ziemi kosmodrom czy halę produkcyjną, w którym / w której z łatwością zmieściłby się – uwaga – 35-kondygnacyjny blok mieszkalny (gdyby bloki takie w Polsce powstawały). Na dnie 112-metrowego szybu znajdziecie też jezioro, po którym można sobie popływać łódkami. Nie mówię już nawet o ulokowanym nieopodal jego brzegów diabelskim młynie (tak, podziemnym).

Nie pisałem też jeszcze o innym wyjątkowym miejscu – wiosce Geamăna, położonej między Klużem i Alba Iulią (tę ostatnią miejscowość też warto zresztą odwiedzić, choćby ze względu na wielką cytadelę Alba Carolina, którą znajdziecie w samym centrum miasta). Stanowi ona (Geamăna, nie Alba Iulia) przykład jednej z największych w Europie katastrof ekologicznych wywołanych przez człowieka.☣️

Miejscowość ta w latach 70/80 ubiegłego wieku zamieniona została na składowisko odpadów powstałych w trakcie eksploatacji lokalnych złóż miedzi, a następnie zalana przez odprowadzaną z kopalni wodę i szlam. Odwiedzający to miejsce czeka surrealistyczny widok. Oto nad trójbarwną, zielono-miedziano-szarą taflą powstałego w efekcie prac górniczych toksycznego jeziora do dziś wznosi się fragment strzelistej, typowej dla Siedmiogrodu wieży wiejskiego kościoła, która przypomina o tym, że nie tak dawno temu żyli tu jeszcze ludzie.

Rumunię, która leży przecież tak blisko naszych granic, warto poznać, odkrywać i zwiedzać. Szczególnie że Polacy są tam naprawdę lubiani. Rumuni – o czym przez zupełnie odklejone od rzeczywistości, krzywdzące stereotypy często nad Wisłą nie wiemy – to bowiem jeden z tych narodów Europy, które 🇵🇱Polskę i Polaków darzą szczerą sympatią.

I went by City Hall tonight for the sunset vigil on International Overdose Awareness Day.

It’s hard to see in the photo, but at the base of the building are candles representing people who have overdosed and died in San Francisco. I’ve long chronicled the fentanyl crisis here, and I wanted to document the evening.

I didn’t stay long. After I took this photograph, a San Francisco Sheriff’s deputy approached me, upset that I had a drone in the air. He said it was illegal.

It isn’t. City Hall is not in restricted airspace, and the drone did not launch or land from a city park. I tried to explain that. He wasn’t having it. He kept insisting it was illegal and told me I had to leave, so I packed up and left.

At least I got one dramatic photo of the vigil and City Hall.

The deputy also asked, over and over, who I was with. I’m not sure why that mattered. I told him I wasn’t “with” anyone. I was there because I care about the overdoses in this city, because my brother was a dead addict, and because I’m a blogger posting photos of tonight’s vigil.

He kept repeating that the drone was illegal. It wasn’t. He told me to leave anyway.

Whatever the case.

Photography is not a crime.

Odd that they care so much about photography but not as much about the two addicts that die every day in San Francisco.

Ich kaufe jetzt schon seit Jahren immer mal wieder Filme bei Apple, vor allem wenn sie gerade mal im Angebot sind. Ich dachte, dass ich mir die dann ja auch noch in ein paar Jahren immer wieder anschauen kann! Weit gefehlt!!!

Leider muss ich immer wieder feststellen, dass gekaufte Filme nicht mehr abrufbar sind! Es handelt sich um keinen Einzelfall! Es betrifft ungefähr 5% meiner Bibliothek!!!

Die Cover der Filme erscheinen zwar noch in der Bibliothek aber Apple bietet sie einfach nicht mehr an, obwohl ich sie nicht gemietet, sondern gekauft habe! Ich habe auf “KAUFEN” geklickt @AppleTV!

Kann es sein, dass ich eine andere Auffassung davon habe, was es bedeutet etwas zu kaufen??

Sowas ist echt unverschämt!!! Für mich ist das Betrug! Auch wenn das irgendwo versteckt in den AGB steht! Wenn ein gekaufter Film aus dem Streamingangebot genommen wird, sollte man automatisch den Kaufpreis erstatten!

Bitte teilt das, damit Apple antwortet!

Tomorrow will be my last day at Google after 27 years, and watching it grow from 25 people to 190,000+ has been an amazing journey. Below is a note I shared with many people internally at Google today. An excerpt is:

It has been an absolute pleasure to work with you and to help build some of the most widely used and impactful products of all time. As a kid, I dreamed of helping build software that would be used by many people, and Google now has thirteen products used by more than a billion people (amazing!). Our work has had a tremendous impact in the world, and I have been lucky enough to collaborate and form friendships with many colleagues that I deeply admire, respect, and enjoy. It still brings me joy every time I see people out in the world using our products to find information, handle email, translate documents, watch videos, learn new things, navigate and understand the physical world, browse the web, use their phone, run large-scale computations on our infrastructure, ride in an autonomous vehicle, or perform complex tasks with the help of our AI systems. I hope you all share this sense of joy, because it is a shared accomplishment! Thank you to all of my colleagues at Google over many years!

I've always been a workaholic. But I have never worked at the pace I do now. Since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, I haven't had a single day off. Some mornings I wake up feeling like I simply can't keep going. But somehow, I do. Honestly, I don't even know how.

I don't know how our Defenders endure it. I don't know how Ukrainians keep moving forward after daily Russian attacks and air raid alerts - how we keep working, living, and carrying on.

Alongside the work I do behind the scenes, I have also become a blogger - someone who speaks and writes about Ukraine and the Ukrainian experience every single day. I believe these daily posts are a weapon of their own. But they are also emotionally and intellectually exhausting, because every tragedy passes through me before and while I put it on social media.

Reading and listening are difficult experiences too. Some of you tell me in the comments that you read my posts every day. This shared experience is painful, as well. But it is also a source of support for all of us here. Because we are heard, and we have a voice. It gives us hope, and it is deeply human.

This might be a bit all over the place, but I just wanted to say thank you for reading and for supporting Ukraine.

A treasure has been found 👏

The Gold Helmet of Coțofenești, a 2,500-year-old artifact from the Dacia civilization, and one of Romania's national treasures, has been recovered in the Netherlands.

The priceless piece has been listed in INTERPOL’s Stolen Works of Art Database since the day of its theft in 2025, thanks to swift action and reporting by @Politie.

Containing more than 58,000 records, the database is the largest global repository of police-certified information on stolen cultural property.

It is accessible to law enforcement, art dealers, the general public and museums, including via the ID-Art mobile app.

This case highlights the importance of timely reporting and international cooperation in the protection of cultural heritage.
