@m_millsey Hi. Looking forward to working w/u & Bobby in ATL soon. I play bass in ASO. Here's a lil REM tribute my chamber group did: https://t.co/5VSVtsvlpF
Playing a whole program of Mozart is so good for your soul. It's something big orchestras rarely get to do anymore. The ASO concert tomorrow night is being simulcast and streamed and stuff, if you can't make it to the hall but you need something for your soul, tune in.
Had my first exp teaching composition to a classroom filled with middle and high school students yesterday. As far as I can recall, my presentation was mostly incoherent rambling mixed with audio samples of Pachelbel, Everly Bros, and Tool.
The early stages of composing music from scratch are unsettling, with no hook pestering my brain yet, no form to pour notes into. All tunnel, no light. I just have to keep exploring every germ and tangent, visibility limited, not oriented to any horizon, until something clicks.
Time to start a new piece. Where does it come from? If the need comes before the inspiration, i dig through a file full of various sketches to see if maybe i've already had an idea worth developing.
Jury still out.
Had a great meeting yesterday with Amy Wilson, who conducts the Atl Phil orch, about privilege and responsibility, and about sharing our platform with those whose voices need to be heard.
with Bill Hatcher on guitar, Robert Strickland on piano, and Bill Wilder on drums. Great combo. I had a solo on a tune called "When Love Was King" and I'd rather be clever than get stuck improvising, so i based my solo on MLK's favorite hymn: Precious Lord, Take My Hand.
Hello again twitterverse, it's been awhile. Imma start tweeting music stuff, composing stuff, etc, so @ me with any questions or comments regarding such.
I just got back from playing an ASO show with jazz singer @GregoryPorter and i got to play up front in the rhythm section..
