Our condolences to the family and loved ones of brother @jimmycliff as he makes his transition. Jimmy was an instrumental figure in Bob’s coming up, having brought him to producer Leslie Kong in 1962 to record his very first singles, “Judge Not” and “One Cup Of Coffee.” 🙏🏾🕊️
Reporter: How and when did you start making music?
BOB: “Well, I was about sixteen, living in Trench Town (Kingston 12). I always loved singing, I loved music, so over a period of time I wrote some songs and eventually did some recordings.”
Reporter: Was that with Leslie Kong?
BOB: “Yeah, Jimmy Cliff took me to see him around ’62. Jimmy was big then because he already had a hit name ‘Hurricane Hattie’ and later ‘miss Jamaica’ another big one. I really love Jimmy because he always tries to help people out.”
Most people are not yet inwardly mature for the better life they so fervently pray for everyday. Given to them, they’d mess it up and everyone around them and LIFE knows this VERY WELL.
The tough and harrowing road is the ONLY merciful road for them, if necessary, for an entire lifetime.
“Find someone easier,” people said. I chose the boy with darker skin and Sam became the light I was missing. When I told my mom, she begged me to stop. “People won’t understand. You’ll get hurt,” she said. But my heart had already chosen. At the orphanage, a boy sat on the cold floor, fixing a toy with tape. Dark skin. Big eyes that didn’t trust. The worker whispered, “He doesn’t talk much. He doesn’t expect to leave.” I knelt down. “Hey, Sam,” I said. A moment passed. Then a small hand reached out and touched my sleeve. That single touch changed everything. The first night, Sam lined up shoes by the door — ready to run. I left the light on. Just in case. Weeks later, laughter filled that same room. Strangers stared in grocery aisles. One woman asked, “Are you sure he’s yours?” I smiled. “More than you could ever know.” Years went fast. Now Sam drives me to the clinic. Reminds me to eat.
