One concept that really stood out to me from this semester was the fact that eugenics was an American concept and used for much longer in the United Sates through forced sterilizations and similar practices. #Socl214

I think that it’s incredibly alarming that one of the acceptance styles of immigration is a lottery and that it has a .5% acceptance rate. It’s also alarming that the immigration process costs thousands just to wait 2-5 years for approval.#Socl214

The statistic that 1 in 9 children of color’s parents are incarcerated is alarming, but honestly not surprising. I do think that the fact that prison sentences are almost becoming inherited is also really important and needs to be addressed very seriously. #Socl214

It’s a little surprising that redlining started under FDR. It’s not surprising that people were systematically excluded from specific loans and neighborhoods.#socl214

I think that it’s very interesting that affirmative action’s legality is dictated by scrutiny tests. The legality of it depends on little factors. It’s also interesting how it’s changed since LBJ with different court cases and new laws passed. #Socl214

I think that it’s not surprising that the model minority myth applies to all Asians because people don’t care between the different Asian ethnicities. It’s also not surprising that it’s used as an insult towards other minorities.#Socl214

I think that it’s totally important to identify and discuss privilege. Privilege needs to be discussed in an open environment that helps prevent blame of or frustration with someone else’s privilege. #socl214

@JozieSocl214 It’s really surprising that it’s so ingrained that straight hair or relaxed hair is beautiful. The beauty standard is definitely biased in American culture.

It’s disturbing that there’s even a concept of good or bad hair. It’s not right for hair to be stigmatized and that the beauty standard is so heavily rooted in eurocentrism. #socl214

It’s not surprising that Hollywood has had a lot of trouble with representation. If you look at a lot of older movies there is a lot of movies with white savior storylines that really weren’t needed.#Socl214

@KiaraP1234 I’ve also never heard of intersectionality being used which is really concerning because it sounds like it’s a really important part of combating racism and discrimination.

I learned that Intersectionality is used as a way to describe compounding discrimination. It’s a relatively new idea that started during the black feminist movement. #socl214
