Autoimmune Encephalitis can be incredibly isolating, especially when it seems no one has heard of it, let alone can understand the recovery process for a brain that has been “on fire” 🔥. We promise ❤️ - you’re not alone, and everyday we are working & raising awareness.
Many thanks to @Texas_Neuros for inviting me to speak about #AutoimmuneEncephalitis at the #TNS2023 summer conference. It was great to share our experience and share how our state can advance the care of AIE
Had a great time presenting our experience at my clinical home😀. If you're interested in learning more about the misdiagnosis of #AutoimmuneEncephalitis and opportunities to help us advance the treatment of AIE, join me in San Antonio this Friday @Texas_Neuros Summer Meeting!
Phenomenal Grand Rounds by my brilliant friend/colleague Dr. Blackburn!! Very informative & well structured talk speaking on the diagnosis/misdiagnosis of autoimmune encephalitis. Exciting to hear about some emerging therapies & clinical trials on the horizon 🌟@kyleblackburnmd
@AMahajanMD@acweyand Totally agree--another solution may be a 'modifier' to the codes that allow that recognizes the cognitive demand associated with rare and complex patients. This would ideally provide more RVUs per patient and lower the overall patient expectation for academic clinicians.
FACT: Encephalitis can be caused by infections or autoimmune conditions where the body's immune responses attack the brain. Even with extensive testing, the cause of encephalitis remains unknown in >30% of cases.
FACT: In addition to psychotic features, confusion, memory loss, abnormal movements and seizures, NMDAR patients can experience severe autonomic dysregulation: causing fluctuations in blood pressure, heart rate and temperature. #EnrollingNow
Excited to be part of this trial with our amazing team @UTSWNeurology, and to work with an amazing international group to bring much needed evidence and better treatments for for patients with #NMDArEncephalitis! #neurotwitter
A brief history of NMDAR Encephalitis milestones👇 After many years in the making, @ExTINGUISHTrial is enrolling NOW at over 20 sites in the US, for newly diagnosed patients, at time of diagnosis: https://t.co/YNdrN0QnUW

FACT: In Autoimmune Encephalitis, the immune system mistakenly attacks healthy brain cells, leading to neurologic and psychiatric symptoms. Go to https://t.co/2qNlmOAPsl: ExTINGUISH Trial - for NEWLY diagnosed NMDAR Encephalitis. #NMDARAwareness, today in the healing mountains⛰
Our residents are hard at work covering a variety of neurology services across Parkland, Clements, the VA, and Children's 💪🧠 Despite busy schedules, there's always time for Vitamin D, Starbucks "pink drinks", and officially retiring 28 hour in-house call!
Great step toward a more transparent, uniform application process. If we can solidify funding for #Neuroimmunology/#AutoimmuneNeurology programs that would be icing on the cake!
Big/wonderful news!
Neuro-immunology announced that they will have a fellowship match starting with the 2023 application cycle (current PGY2s).
This will promote equity and fairness, and should be a huge win for residents. 1/3

Takeaways!
- Keep an eye out for possible AFM cases these next few months.
- Typical presentation: asymmetric flaccid weakness, arms > legs.
- MRI with gray matter predominant changes.
- Report suspected cases to public health authorities.
#AFM. @wearesrna
With August rapidly approaching, I thought now would be a great time to do my first #tweetorial. Let's talk about acute flaccid myelitis (#AFM). #NeuroTwitter#MedTwitter
When evaluating a suspected AFM case, testing for entroviruses via nasopharyngeal swab is recommended. This may be negative further from onset.
And PLEASE remember to report suspected cases to your state health dept/CDC. They will request the following samples:
