@emilyzapinsky @psyc220 #CD7 @psyc220 @emilyzapinsky I love your take and I agree that we should not try to reinforce stigmas especially in children when they are still in developmental stages and are constantly evolving.
it does not allow different perspectives and viewpoints. I want to reflect and intentionally choose a group that promotes diversity in the lab instead of promoting the “status quo”.
#CD7 @psyc220 One big goal in my life is to be a researcher. One way that people who have achieved this role reinforce systems of oppression is through only giving certain people (ex. white people) a chance to research. By not allowing a diverse group of researchers
@DrewFromPsyc220#CD7@DrewFromPsyc220 @psyc220 I also dream of working in music industry and it’s nice to hear this take in an industry where sexual harassment is so prevalent. It is hard enough to make a name for yourself in the industry and it’s sad for women for have to worry about safety.
@egglestonsk23 @psyc220 @egglestonsk23 @psyc220 #CD6 Meredith’s story was impactful and moving to watch. It was interesting how she used her childhood to and her current experiences as an outsider in a whole new environment in her book. It looks like an interesting read!
@ChloeSwan17 @psyc220 #CD6 @psyc220 @ChloeSwan17 I completely agree with your point! It is unjust that a group of people experiencing oppression cannot have access to mental health resources overall.
The lack of mental health resources and access to resources is disappointing to me. I feel that it is unjust for a barrier of funds to stand in the way of receiving proper/any help for mental health.
#CD6 @psyc220 The intersectionality between SES and mental health is an interest to me specifically. I know members of my family as well as friends who want to seek help with mental health but cannot afford it.
@MeganHutcheson7 @psyc220 #220Ethics @psyc220 I agree! Veteran’s day is an important and current example that he posted to display acknowledgment of the loyalty of our veterans in our community.
Who gives a damn what a handful of corporate donors want from Congress? I listen to the people — and here's what the people say:
88% want lower RX drug costs
84% want to expand Medicare to cover dental, vision, and hearing
73% want paid family and medical leave
Let's do it.
@BPsyc220 @psyc220 @BPsyc220 @psyc220 #CD5b I think you pointed out something important about how professors utilize the “real world” excuse that is so overused. It seems unprofessional to be unable to give a better excuse for such a complex issue.
#CD5b @psyc220 this is a powerful example of “inspiration porn” because it portrays a famous runner of his disabilities in a way to motivate people that aren’t disabled. This is one of the many ads Nike uses of disabled folx to motivate others.
@ChloeSwan17 @psyc220 @ChloeSwan17 @psyc220 #CD5b This is a great example and just like the TED talk talked about it uses a disabled person to motivate “normal people”
One might argue that having the TVs creates a barrier in the first place because people who are deaf cannot hear it in the first place in the dining halls and we do not have an accessible TV to watch on campus that aren’t in the dining halls.
#CD5a @psyc220 A barrier JMU creates for disabled communities can be the use of closed captioning on the televisions in the dining halls. Most of the TVs are put up so high it is hard to see or it doesn’t have it on at all.
@DrewFromPsyc220 @psyc220 #CD4 @psyc220 I appreciate that you acknowledge that feminism is a necessity for the solidarity of everyone that experiences oppression in their lifetime that shows that feminism is more of an issue than women’s rights!
#CD4 @psyc220 Feminism comprises many intersectional issues within our society. Since feminism is intersectional, it should be treated as such to include all genders, gender expression, and sexual orientations.
@SarahCaufield @psyc220 @psyc220 #CD4 Yes! The more I learn about feminism the more it reveals to be about more than women’s rights and that it involves many different identities. I also like how you acknowledged that more privileged individuals should pay more attention to this issue.
@gracemagnerr @psyc220 #CD4 @psyc220 I appreciate and agree with your point that feminism isn’t the end all for oppression as it is a complex issue. Intersectional feminism does a good job of touching other aspects of oppression and pinpointing how they affect one another.
@BrookeScanlon15 @psyc220 #CD4 @psyc220 @BrookeScanlon15 I loved how you mentioned education in your argument. Education plays one of the important role in not only starting but fueling the dismantling of oppression.
@SarahCaufield @psyc220 #CD4 @psyc220 @SarahCaufield I completely agree with you! You made an important point about “dismantling the system” in this tweet that emphasizes how intersectional issues work together and are affected by one another.
