🚨An update on this student who wanted to opt out of FASE reading because she was anxious reading aloud in front of class:

Since we returned from winter break, she no longer comes in ahead of class to practice with me but is still reading beautifully and confidently in class. I asked her why the other day. She said she now feels very confident reading out loud in class and is no longer anxious. 👏

And notice what she didn’t say. She didn’t say the class got easier. She didn’t say the expectations changed. She said she changed. She feels confident, she feels safe, and the anxiety is gone. This is exactly why I don’t allow opting out of learning or participation. Support isn’t about escape. It’s about building students to the point where they no longer need the safety net. Growth happens when we keep the door to learning open, not when we let students step out of it.
