The MRF is deeply concerned with the proposed continuing resolution which would cut FY25 funding for the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Program (@CDMRP ) by 57% from $1.5 billion to $650 million.
This cut would drastically hinder the science and research community’s ongoing efforts into new treatments and therapies for #melanoma patients.
We encourage lawmakers to vote NO on this legislation and to instead approve a full FY25 Defense Appropriations to fully fund the CDMRP.
Melanoma research not only benefits our community, but leads to treatment advancements for the entire cancer spectrum. Since 1998, the MRF has funded over $26 million in research grants. Since FY19, melanoma has had its own line item within the CDMRP growing from $10 million to $40 million to date. Funding from the CDMRP is critical for more progress and hope for patients currently battling melanoma.
We encourage our community to use our advocate mobilization link to call your congressperson and urge them to vote NO on the FY25 continuing resolution. The vote may be as soon as Tuesday, so please take action ASAP.

An incredible MRF Advocacy Days! This year, we welcomed 50 advocates to Washington, DC for an impactful three-day program to meet with legislators on behalf of the #melanoma community to transform melanoma care & advance better outcomes.
Today, our nationwide advocates conducted 54 meetings with their representatives and senators on key issues such as funding for the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Program (CDMRP) in support of melanoma research; support funding for the @NIH, @theNCI, and @CDC urging the FDA to remove barriers that would limit sunscreen ingredients and sunscreen access for Americans and increase access to #telehealth by advancing the CONNECT for Health Act.
We are so thankful to our event sponsors @bmsnews, @Novartis, @Merck, @IovanceBio, @Replimune & @kenvue. #MRFAdvocacyDays24

A recent @Resolve_GH@DannyBuckland article highlights why #melanoma remains under-diagnosed in skin of color populations and discusses myths around melanoma in skin of color individuals. In the article, MRF’s Chief Communications and Marketing Officer, James Merrick, shared, “It is mission critical to ensure that communities of color have the awareness and education to dispel some of the common myths with respect to skin cancer and melanoma that have existed among them for centuries.”
While it is vital to raise awareness of sun safety for communities of color, it is also imperative to better educate the next generation of medical students and dermatologists to better understand melanoma in people of color. The article also mentions, “only 4.5% of images in general medical textbooks feature black skin, deepening the racial inequality in healthcare. The MRF is actively working to increase awareness through its Skin of Color Institute - https://t.co/ls35mcg9nP

“We are bombarded with ads in the spring and summer about sunscreen protection from melanoma, and being Black and brown, ignorance will continue to let us think we cannot be affected by this deadly disease.”

Thank you @US_FDA for this approval, @IovanceBio for its tireless dedication to the science and the countless courageous #melanoma patients who have participated in #clinicaltrials which has led to this treatment being available to all! 🖤
On February 16th, AMTAGVI™, the first cellular therapy indicated for the treatment of adult patients with cutaneous (skin) #melanoma that is unable to be removed with surgery (unresectable) or has spread to other parts of the body (metastatic) that previously has been treated with other therapies has been approved by the @US_FDA! This now brings the total of approvals for #melanoma patients to 16 that can be used singly or in combination to treat 31 different stages of melanoma, significantly raising the survival rates by nearly 50% for metastatic melanoma patients. Research Creates Hope and Hope Changes Everything. #ProgressisPower! #FDAapproval #research https://t.co/E3C08SLGaT
