Just spent 5 minutes playing "We Become What We Behold," and it’s one of the most quietly devastating little games I’ve ever encountered. My teenage son is using a part of it as an example in his humanities class.

You’re a news photographer in a simple crowd of circles and squares. All you do is take pictures of whatever looks “newsworthy” and watch the hashtags explode. Cute couple? Meh. Minor argument? Clickbait. A fight? Now we’re talking.

What you choose to amplify doesn’t just report the world — it reshapes it. Focus on division long enough and the crowd tears itself apart. Try to pivot to kindness later? Too late. “Peace is boring.” The cycle is locked in.

We become what we behold.

This hits especially hard for me because I was there the day Charlie Kirk was killed. The violence we’re seeing is spiraling out of control — from assassinations to shots fired at major events. And instead of basic human compassion, what do we get? The internet piling on with cruel mockery of Erika Kirk, his grieving widow, for showing trauma after the chaos at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. Her tears become content. Her pain becomes a punchline. It’s deeply upsetting to watch.

Every scroll, every share, every algorithmic rage-bait headline is us taking that photo. We tell ourselves we’re just observers, but we’re co-authors of the story. Outrage gets rewarded. Basic humanity gets buried. And the crowd keeps radicalizing.

This isn’t just about “the media.” It’s about us — what we click, what we pass on, what we normalize by paying attention to it.
