my middle school teacher basically scrutinized me and my peer’s grammar by implementing the latin based prescription of “me” and “I”. I still hypercorrect myself till this day in fear of him hearing me lol #fa25e211o2
the first step of language acquisition being imitation make sense because that’s what babies do- it sounds like babbles but that’s how their speech is relayed. i also found it fascinating that adult like grammar is acquired after 5-6 years #fa25e211o2
I want to include the active involvement of linguistic development from the perspective of teachers but also the students/children learning #fa25e211o2
I appreciate how the myth didn’t criticize people for not learning or retaining “speaking english” but rather varieties of English. Separating elements of language and users. #fa25e211o2
Conducting spelling tests and/or anything adjacent can be detrimental on self esteem and make children not want to go to school in fear of being “dumb”, or being belittled in front of the entire class like what was mentioned in the myth.

@aramirez_life words changing overtime support how humans and time evolves. if language did not change, then communication would be difficult and hard to associate with what’s new.
Point 3 “Word meanings evolve as we use words differently”, immediately reminded me of Myth 1. I liked how words were compared to currency, and how their value and use changes over time #fa25e211o2
Polysemy makes sense, especially when given an example like in the video. You can associate the meanings, like the head is one of the most vital parts of the human body, where head of a company is the most vital person. #fa25e211o2
@suttok3 Outdated is the perfect word to describe this myth. However, the text was published in 1998, so it makes sense the author included this myth. Holmes does a good job of debunking it. I was peeved reading the different comments and visual stereotypes about women.
Myth 6 explores the stereotype of women “talking too much”. I can relate to the part explaining how women won’t necessarily speak on things they’re not aware about, but provide listening ears. I do the same and typically respond with “ohh” or “mmhmm” in those convos. #fa25e211o2
Myth 5 taught me that there are actually 20 vowels. I was only aware of the ones taught in elementary school- a, e, i, o, u and sometimes y. It makes me ponder if I should stop signing that apples and bananas baby song to my god brother. #fa25e211o2
Myth 4 revealed French being “the logical language” that only “rational minded” people use. I found it illogical that the structure s+v+o makes the language superior, even when other languages incorporate that structure. #fa25e211o2
