Long waits for treatment, difficulty communicating with clinicians and cancellations at short notice – this is the current reality of #NHS outpatient services.
Last month in the @bmj_latest, our clinical lead for outpatients Dr @Theresa_C_B set why outpatient reform must be a part of the 10-year plan. Read the piece: https://t.co/vUijtK8Yqx

We’ve published a new position statement on the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill. While the bill has undergone a number of changes during the public bill committee phase, there currently remain deficiencies that would need addressing to achieve adequate protection of patients and professionals.
Our statement sets out the key factors that must be protected in the legislation if assisted dying were to become legal in England and Wales by way of the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill.

In November last year, we held a roundtable with our medical specialties to discuss the shared and unique challenges facing our workforces - our write up sets out key themes that must be considered in the 2025 iteration of the NHS England Long Term Workforce Plan.
These include the physician as leaders of a multidisciplinary workforce and as specialist advisers, changing patterns of working and the challenges of the front door.

The #NHS must eliminate ‘corridor care’ - it is simply unsafe and unacceptable.
In our new position statement, we’re calling on the NHS and governments across the UK to:
-formally measure and report how many patients are being treated in temporary care environments all year round
-put systems and processes in place to eliminate ‘corridor care’
-support patients and staff when care is delivered in temporary environments.

"Clinical researchers need more time and funding for research"
As Academic Vice President for Royal College of Physicians I discussed the @RCPhysicians view with Allison Gardner MP (Science Innovation and Technology Select Committee @AllisonCGardner, @CommonsSITC ) using the work of The Pandemic I Institute @ThePandemicInst as an example.
She raised the issue next day in @HouseofCommons debate on pandemic preparedness, where @PatMcfaddenMP Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster @cabinetofficeuk agreed on the value of research.
With @AoMRC are pressing @NHSEngland and @DHSCgovuk to support clinical academic careers, and ensure time for research in NHS job plans and resident doctor @RCP_RDC training
Too many patients are being treated in corridors and chairs. It's unsafe, undignified & unacceptable.
That is why we & @theRCN have been calling for provider-level data on care delivered in temporary environments.
Delighted that @nhsengland has now announced that NHS trusts will report against a new corridor care metric from this month👇
Yesterday, Professor Sanjay Agrawal, our special adviser on tobacco gave evidence to the public bill committee examining the Tobacco and Vapes Bill.
He reiterated our support for the bill and answered questions specifically regarding vape flavours, the socioeconomic impacts of smoking, as well as explaining his clinical experience of smoking in his daily practice.
It was great to meet with Minister Baroness Merron today to discuss the importance of ensuring clinicians have adequate time and access to undertake the #clinicalresearch needed to drive medical innovation.
Tackling #healthinequalities is key to improving health and reducing avoidable demand on health services.
Our new guidance, Bridging the gap, aims to empower clinicians and leaders within the #NHS to help make reducing health inequalities a bigger part of core business: https://t.co/bKbv5pYiSx
‘The 10-year plan must recognise the role of NHS staff in delivering the government’s vision for health and account for the impact of current workforce capacity on delivering reform over the next decade. Current assumptions about staffing numbers, capacity and retention in the short, medium and long-term must feed into the 10-year plan to ensure the vision is ambitious but feasible.’
Dr @Mumtaz_Patel_1, acting as RCP president, reflects on the government’s consultation on its 10-year health plan and focuses on the sickness to prevention shift: https://t.co/ZaFp81u1cU
Can you advertise porridge oats on TV?
🥣 Yes – if it’s not high in salt, fat, or sugar.
Sound reasonable?
Check out this handy chart to see which foods and drinks can STILL be advertised under new restrictions starting October 2025
The @gmcuk#StateOfMed report makes clear there must be a review of postgraduate training.
'It is imperative that our next generation of physicians are valued and supported in their educational and training journeys. We need to keep them in our UK training system rather than force them out. They need to feel valued and supported and we call for action and reform of the recruitment and training pathways.’ @Mumtaz_Patel_1

We continue to hear from #RCPmembers that providing care in corridors is becoming more frequent given the high levels of demand in urgent and emergency care and worsening discharge delays.
Thank you to @HelenMorganMP for highlighting the concerns from Dr @j59dd and for asking government if they will publish data on those receiving care in temporary environments within her contribution, as we’ve been calling for: https://t.co/KWCSilTf0r
.@wesstreeting says he's about to start the "big engagement exercise" on the new year 10 year plan for the NHS. It will deliver shift to community care, analogue to digital transformation and moving from sickness to prevention @IPPR
