Iran begins oil export talks with Japanese buyers under US waiver

Iran has started discussions with Japanese firms following a US sanctions waiver that permits it to restart oil exports. However, potential purchasers are requesting a longer waiver period along with assurances over the safety of shipping routes, according to three Iranian and Western sources to Reuters.

The waiver was granted on 22 June as part of 60-day peace negotiations between Tehran and Washington and is set to remain in effect until 21 August.

According to two Iranian sources, three Japanese buyers are considering importing Iranian crude for the first time since 2019.

A Western industry source familiar with the issue also said that Japanese and Iranian officials have entered preliminary discussions regarding potential oil transactions.

A representative from Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, which is responsible for overseeing the country's fuel supply infrastructure, said he "was unaware of any such matter."
