Perhaps the most disheartening aspect of being a physician is that when things go wrong, the instant response is that our intentions were to harm, not help. Is this not why we become jaded?
My therapist, whom I was talking to about my burnout, recommended that I take 30 minutes out of my 1 hour lunch break (which she just assumed I have) to just "do nothing." I laughed a lot. Lunch break? Doctors don't get lunch breaks. Sometimes I still forget to pee at work.
Who on earth decided that twenty minutes was even close to enough time to room a patient, review their med list, discuss their concerns, complete a physical exam, counsel them, and address their questions? Don’t come for my efficiency, this is a system issue #FamilyMedicine
My maternal grandad learnt how to make a WhatsApp video call at the age of 95 and he is so happy he can see people who he can't meet during the pandemic :)
