Saint Jude Thaddeus, one of the Twelve Apostles and the patron saint of hopeless causes, is traditionally depicted in Catholic iconography wearing or holding a large medallion around his neck.
This medallion features an imprinted image of Jesus Christ's face and serves as a key symbol in his representations.

T he medallion originates from story tied to the Image of Edessa, also known as the Mandylion, an acheiropoietos (not made by human hands) cloth bearing Christ's face. According to tradition:
King Abgar V of Edessa (in modern-day Turkey) suffered from a severe illness and wrote a letter to Jesus requesting healing.
Jesus replied that he could not visit but promised to send a disciple.

After the Ascension, St. Jude Thaddeus traveled to Edessa, carrying either a cloth imprinted with Christ's face (pressed against it during the Passion) or a folded portion of the Shroud of Turin showing only the face.
Jude presented this image to the king, who was miraculously healed upon seeing it, leading to the conversion of Edessa to Christianity.

This act established Jude as a bringer of healing and hope in desperate situations, reinforcing his role as patron of impossible causes. The medallion thus symbolizes:
. Christ's healing power channeled through Jude.
. St. Jude's devotion and role as an intercessor.
. Faith in divine intervention when all seems lost.

The medallion is often shown as a round pendant or cloth draped over his chest, sometimes held in his hand.
