It is true that a picture says a thousand of words. All you need to do is show the below picture as an example. Very humbling and sad. Will you do all you can as an educator to teach future students to practice responsible consumption? #UoNTeach
For young students to be life long learners in sustainability, one must provide an optimal learning environment. Clapper (2010) says teachers can make a difference for learners, and parents can also make an effect. Why not combine a lesson where parents are invited? #UoNTeach
Crunching some numbers can be the best way to get a point across on topics such as waste and sustainability. Check out this excellent online resource that can be used for not only reading purposes but also an educational tool in schools. https://t.co/VS2cGwYrVX #UoNTeach
This kind of recycling game on the iPads in classrooms is a quick, easy and relaxing way for students to gain a thorough understanding of sustainability and hopefully become future recyclers! Definitely recommend the use of ICT. #UoNTeach#sustainability
Google Classroom makes digital learning SO easy! I sent out a link to this recycling game on GC, and all my students are applying their learning of recycling by sorting items into different bins! @Kel_Sanders
There’s nothing better than creating an awesome artwork but also doing your part to the environment, in this case, reusing waste. Student from this photo used lids of all kinds of bottles and tins. Great stuff! (The poster is displayed in a business office!) #UoNTeach#artwork
This looks awesome. I like the sorting of waste in specific bins. Definitely a lesson plan idea/resource schools to implement. Hope this helps any teachers looking for environmental ideas. #UoNTeach#waste
Last month the Environmental Sustainability, Education and Engagement Unit of our team hosted the second annual Khmer Community Potluck at Seward Park on August 17. About 250 people attended for the festivities. The waste sorting activity was very popular!
An effective educational video on waste. Students from early stage 1 all the way to stage 3 can learn from the three R’s. Good to see subtitles being provided for access to all students too. #UoNTeach#SDG12#reducewaste https://t.co/1R6Y8n86rT
Clean up Australia Day sounds great! Great way to organise a day to reduce waste and come up with ideas such as compost bins in schools. I like the idea of having a clean up day at school and around the community that students can get involved in. #UoNTeach#SDG12
The leadership team ran Clean Up Australia Day today. An amazing effort across the school. Lots of thinking about how we can reduce waste, including ideas to have compost bins on the playground, recycle soft and hard plastics and have plastic free lunches ♻️💚
By 2050, the ocean is on track to have more plastic than fish! So it all starts in schools and having posters like these can help. Students can bring knowledge back in their homes to their parents too! These posters not only connect to #SDG12 but also #SDG14. #UoNTeach
This school is paving the way for innovative ideas on recycling. Maybe teachers can implement some ‘free time’ on Friday afternoons if the whole class brings in 100 recycling items each week for the personalised bin in the classroom! #UoNTeach#recycling#SDG12
Students of the 21st century should be taught global competence where they can engage and act on issues of global significance (Mansilla & Jackson, 2011). It’s important to have students of the future to be globally competent. Do you agree? #UoNTeach
Here is 5 simple ideas to do your part in reducing waste in your home.
1. Reuse containers
2. Reuse cups
3. Make meal plans
4. Don’t buy/use single use items
5. Cancel unnecessarily mail, magazines, newspaper (transfer to online instead)
#UoNTeach#SDG12 ♻️
One great way to reduce waste packaging is creating a food garden for you to use at home. No waste at all! Has anyone had a crack at doing this? #UoNTeach#reducewaste
With the COVID-19 crisis, there is a growing problem of excess waste and lack of recycling in people’s homes. When times get tough, it is important to try and maintain order and routine such as recycling to avoid a global waste crisis from COVID-19 #SGD12#UoNTeach
@CodySomerville5 This is nice! Definitely a good way for students to learn about climate change as we move forward to a ever changing 21st century. The activity seems inclusive to all students as well which is great to see! #climatechange
This is very relevant for a city like Newcastle who is the largest coal exporting harbour in the world as well Australia being the biggest coal exporter in the world. It would be great to see coal ash being transformed to be used for building schools locally! #SDG12#UoNTeach
Watch how our team in #Malawi is transforming coal ash #waste from the factory into some solid, air cured building blocks which are then used to build schools or village clinics in tobacco growing areas. #reducereuserecycle#wastereduction#SDG12
This can definitely be used by teachers and students alike in schools, not just by parents. I see plenty of art and crafts lessons with these ‘junk’ materials, or even a game like noughts and crosses with the bottle caps! #UoNTeach#recycling
@JohnCronin98 I have seen this in classrooms but not to this level! This is an excellent way to teach students not everything is useless. We could use plastic cups as well! #sustainability
What a fantastic idea. The Waste Action Plan for Ireland is banning single use items next year. Especially when there was more than 1 million tonnes of waste packaging in 2017. Could this be implemented in Australian school canteens? #UoNTeach#reducewaste
