I’ve been listening to Leonard Cohen since I was a kid and grew up wanting to be the subject of one of his songs— or any song really. Then I met the Suzanne behind “Suzanne” and she changed everything. Thank you for reading @Longreads
And she inevitably disappeared under the weight of Cormac’s projects and from his constant leaching of her trauma. This was not a love story—it was a muse story that reveals both the power of muses and what they inevitably end up sacrificing to the artist.
The problem with the VF Cormac McCarthy muse piece is that Britt chose a novice writer who did not have the experience to fact check her story and didn’t want to bc he obviously fell in love with her and fell in love with the way Cormac viewed her.
This was never a love story—it’s a story about survival and the myths Britt had to create around an abusive relationship in order to survive it. This is a story about a woman who has never had an identity or even purpose outside of Cormac McCarthy.
If anyone wants to read a piece that gives into the complications and trauma of being a “muse” I wrote about Suzanne Verdal, the woman behind Leonard Cohen’s “Suzanne.” https://t.co/qeCEogVz5S
Out of the rack and ruin of our gangster death,
The rape and rot of graft, and stealth, and lies,
We, the people, must redeem
The land, the mines, the plants, the rivers.
…
All, all the stretch of these great green states—
And make America again! - Langston Hughes

@d2dawson@gurriersband You do realize these are Irish bands right? They are from an entirely different country and do not share our constitution. Their declining to join the event literally has nothing to do with Americans first amendment right. Your post is gibberish

The continued loss of full-time staff writers at American media companies with ghoulish executives is going to make the country an even dumber, less democratic place in addition to hastening our health insurance crisis.
