Iran’s new strike strategy could turn an air war into a ground war in the Middle East.

Iran has reportedly targeted a desalination plant in Bahrain, a critical facility that converts seawater into drinking water. In Gulf countries such as Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Kuwait and Qatar, desalination plants are essential because natural freshwater sources are extremely limited.

These plants are usually located near power stations and oil refineries. If they are disrupted, water supply, energy production and industrial operations across the region could be affected.

Such strikes could increase internal pressure on Gulf countries to push the United States to change its strategy against Iran.

The situation also matters for India. Many Middle Eastern countries export key fertilizers such as urea to India. If supply routes through the Strait of Hormuz are disrupted, fertilizer prices and agricultural costs in India could rise.

This shows how interconnected this conflict is. A single strike in the Middle East can affect water, energy, food and global trade.
