every thriller book is called “the other woman never lied.” every feminist book is called “doggystyle: outbursts.” every lit-fic book is called “the 14 delightful fortnights of dorothy dopple.” and every romantasy book is called “flood of bones” or “a court of scars and blades.”
“Don’t you understand,” he roared, grasping his tanned forehead in torment, “If you don’t let me buy you a helicopter by nightfall, I will die of shame.” Her face opened radiantly like a cat flap.
“But Lord Crystalraven,” she whispered. “I am but a humble kitchen maid and you are still mourning your dead wife. I saw her ghost in the corridor today.”
His eyes glowed turquoise. “I have a dark secret, Bertha-Mae. My wife is in fact…not dead.”
Today, I'm giving a talk at the Arundel Literary Festival on the threat AI poses to the creative arts in general, and honestly, the more research I do, the more bleak the landscape looks.
So...here's my request to brighten things up, celebrate human creativity, and share our recommendations for artists in all disciplines. Post a recommendation on this thread. Could be a painter, musician, ceramicist, a 'knitter' (is that the word?), or even a writer, with maybe a few words about what sets you on fire from their work.
I'll start with this...I'm a huge fan of painter Andrew Wyeth. I think it's because I can always see myself in the place he paints, and he gives a perspective, so you don't just see the landscape, you see it through another person eyes.
Writer? It's always been Thomas Hardy for me - my comfort reads. But current...Kristin Hannah who can do no wrong. Her books transport me. Music - I'm a Fleetwood Mac fan down to the bone.
So give me some names to look up, or a song to listen to. The best of humanity is in its creativity.
Sod being like Lizzy Bennet, being Mary is where it's at: put on some fugly glasses and belt out Slumber, Dear Maid at a party without giving a shit if anyone likes it, and spend all your days reading and learning and being brighter and more logical than all the men around you
My best tip for anyone trying to get back into reading is to remember that you can read books to avoid other responsibilities in your life, and it can become a vice if you play your cards right.
