But the doors in the UK remain pretty much shut. He's been passed over time and again for less qualified candidates. Seeing his experiences in the last 5 years has been a real window for me into how racist the system is.
In the end he couldn't keep us up, nobody on earth could. We had a budget under 100 times that of other clubs. But Shadab out-thought every team there and ended up coaching with the Mongolia national team. Now he's working with a Euro 2020 nation on their coaching team.
Better than that he was totally unfazed by the mountain of obstacles we faced. We had no training pitch so we brokered a deal to share Erchim's - the champions - they tried to back out so Shadab threw their first team off their own pitch without knowing a word of Mongolian!
I've never seen anyone work like Shadab. By the time he got to Mongolia he knew our opponents better than their coaches knew them. I'd wake up to messages from him at 3 a.m. telling me which Khoromkhon right-back we should pressure in possession.
Amongst the applicants was one that stood out head and shoulders above the rest, his reference was Roberto Martinez for one thing! He was Shadab Iftikhar. I called him while he was in Asda in Preston on a Friday, he was in Ulan Bator the following Wednesday.
This also meant that our two young Mongolian coaches couldn't stay on because they didn't have the coaching badge needed for the Premier League. There were basically no coaches in Mongolia we could approach. So I advertised on Twitter for a coach starting in 2 weeks in Mongolia!
As a few people asked, here's what happened next in Mongolia. We were building a club based on homegrown talent, we'd intended to stay in second tier for a year but suddenly a club refused their place in the Premier League so we were told we had to take it, 14 days before season.
@paul_c_watson@FGRFC_Official It was a privilege to be Shab’s captain. He is as passionate as he is astute, a student of the game but prepared to take a risk. A true gent who is honest with his players and works hard to improve them. I hope league clubs recognise his value, many of us at @hbafc certainly do.
That's why I was really heartened to see my local club @FGRFC_Official saying they will do things differently with their next manager, hope others follow that lead and look forward to the day Shadab finally gets a chance to shine without having to literally go to Outer Mongolia.
