Not rarely in Southern Brazil, Noctiluca preys upon cells of harmful algae like #Dinophysis, becoming a vector of their diarrhetic #shellfish#toxins to #marine#food webs and #seafood consumers.
Although classified as #microalgae, these #dinoflagellates are heterotrophic microorganisms, actively feeding on other algal cells, which can be almost as large as them!
