BREAKING: Trump says bombing will stop based on request by Iran's leaders, but will resume tomorrow if a deal is not signed, according to Fox News report.
70% of people think AI could cause large-scale job losses. And 27% of people even think it could cause humanity's extinction.
That sort of tension means AI's status as a bottom-two issue *probably won't last*.
I think it’s really under-appreciated that a core fact of American politics is Republicans have this extreme outlier view of health care that no other major political party in the world tries to uphold.
People outside of AI don't freak out quite enough in response to new system cards because, even if they do read them, there is a lot of unstated context missing...
For example, here is some context on one paragraph in the executive summary of today's Fable/Mythos card.
I basically think the average voter is pretty wrong on:
1) Nuclear power (it's good)
2) Foreign aid (we spend very little on it and should spend more)
3) Climate change (a majority say they're not willing to have any additional amounts of their tax money spent on climate. The national average willingness to pay for things that help with climate is ~$300 per year)
4) Immigration (I think it's broadly good across the board, and definitely good to get more high skilled immigrants specifically)
5) Price controls in general (bad!)
I'd like governments to patiently nod along to voter concerns but quietly approve more nuclear, spend more on foreign aid, pay way more on climate, and allow at least more high skilled immigrants. I just flat out think it's wrong for politicians to have 1-1 similar views to the median voter and sometimes they need to diverge.
This is as close as you’ll get to a right-winger just admitting that they are totally uninterested in what is true or false; they simply demand to be assuaged.
They must *feel* calmed and satisfied. In their view, we all exist only to serve their feelings.
The Senate confirmation process is meant to prevent the President from filling key roles with people possessing the "pliancy to render them the obsequious instruments of his pleasure." (Hamilton, Federalist 76).
The president, of course, wants such figures. The Senate should do its job and deny him such figures.
My sense --- based on talking around --- is that President Trump wants out of this conflict ASAP, and that his patience with Bibi is running extremely short.
