Venice sits on 10 million tree trunks that were hammered into mud over 1,000 years ago. They never rotted, because the Venetians stumbled onto the one loophole in how wood dies.

Rot is a biological process. Fungi and bacteria eat wood, and nearly all of them need oxygen to survive. The Venetians drove their piles through the soft lagoon floor into dense clay, fully below the waterline, where the mud is packed so tight oxygen can't reach. The organisms that destroy wood simply starve down there.

Then the water does something stranger. Minerals in the seawater seep into the submerged trunks year after year, filling the wood's cells and slowly hardening them. Give it enough centuries and the wood drifts toward stone.

The wet-dry zone at the surface, where rot actually thrives, never touches the wood at all. Venetians capped every pile below the low-tide line with slabs of Istrian limestone, a stone so dense it barely absorbs water, then built the brick and marble on top of that. The wood stays drowned forever. Drowned is the safe state.

When the bell tower in St. Mark's Square collapsed in 1902, engineers dug in expecting a rotten foundation. They found piles roughly 1,000 years old still intact, and reinforced them rather than replace them.

Records from the Salute church claim 1,106,657 piles were driven for that single building, over about two years of continuous hammering. The Rialto Bridge sits on 12,000 more.

Venice is a petrified forest planted upside down, and the water everyone assumes is killing the city has spent ten centuries preserving its foundations.

In November 1900, five men who had just taken $32,000 out of a bank in Nevada sat down and decided the right move was a group photo.

The gang was Butch Cassidy's Wild Bunch. The five were Butch, the Sundance Kid, Harvey Logan who went by Kid Curry, Will Carver, and Ben Kilpatrick.

On September 19, 1900, they had hit the First National Bank of Winnemucca and gotten away with about $32,640, which was serious money and, because of how it was insured and pursued, serious heat. Their usual hideout in Wyoming was too hot to go back to. So they drifted down to Fort Worth and settled into Hell's Half Acre, the red light district, with a lot of cash and nothing to do.

They bought new suits. They bought new derby hats, which was a formal city hat that men in the West mostly did not wear.

And on November 21, 1900, all five of them walked into John Swartz's photography studio on Main Street and posed.

The result is one of the most recognizable photographs in American history. Five men in wool suits and vests and watch chains, three standing, two seated, everybody groomed, everybody relaxed, looking for all the world like the board of directors of a small savings bank.

Swartz was proud of it. He printed a copy and put it up in his gallery window on Main Street.

Fort Worth was a major railroad town, which meant it was crawling with railroad and express company detectives. Somebody walking down Main Street stopped at that window and recognized a face. Sources disagree on who exactly, either a Fort Worth police detective named Charles Scott or the Wells Fargo detective Fred Dodge.

The photograph went to the Pinkerton National Detective Agency, who described it as their first real break in the case.

Understand what they had before that. Aliases, physical descriptions, a lot of contradictory eyewitness guesses. What they suddenly had instead was a crisp studio portrait of the entire leadership of the gang, correctly identified, all five faces looking straight at the camera.

By May 1901 the Pinkertons had circulars going out with those faces on them to law enforcement across North America and South America.

Here is what happened to the men in the picture.

Will Carver was dead within five months. Sheriff Lige Briant and his deputies moved on him in a bakery in Sonora, Texas in April 1901. He was hit six times before his gun cleared the holster.

Harvey Logan was captured, escaped a jail in Knoxville, and in 1904, wounded and surrounded after a botched train robbery near Parachute, Colorado, killed himself rather than be taken.

Ben Kilpatrick was arrested in 1901 and did about ten years in federal prison. He got out and immediately went back to robbing trains. In 1912 he and a partner took over an express car outside Sanderson, Texas, not knowing the messenger inside, David Trousdale, was sitting with a shipment of frozen oysters and the heavy mallet used to break up the ice. Trousdale caved in the partner's skull with the mallet, took his rifle, and shot Kilpatrick in the head when he came to the window. Wells Fargo gave Trousdale a thousand dollars and an engraved gold watch.

Butch and Sundance left the country. Argentina in 1901, ranching in Patagonia for a while with Etta Place, then back to robbery, and most likely dead in a shootout with soldiers at San Vicente, Bolivia in 1908.

There is a great old story that Butch mailed a print of the photograph to the Winnemucca bank with a thank you note. It is almost certainly not true.

It did not need to be. The Pinkertons had hunted these men for years without ever getting a decent picture of a single one of them.

In the end the gang commissioned that picture themselves, paid for it, dressed up for it, and sat still.

La légende raconte que le nom « Virgo » viendrait d’une jeune fille qui aurait indiqué la source à des soldats assoiffés. Que cela soit vrai ou non, le message est clair : lorsqu’un ouvrage public est bien conçu et entretenu par tous, il peut devenir éternel.

Richard III is the last king of England to die in battle, and thanks to the discovery of his skeleton in 2012, we now know almost exactly how it happened, blow by blow. It was not a clean or noble death. It was a frantic, savage killing of a man swarmed under and hacked apart, and the bones tell the story more honestly than any chronicle.

The end came when Richard gambled everything on a cavalry charge straight at his rival Henry Tudor, drove to within a sword's length of him, and was then cut off as Sir William Stanley's fresh troops crashed in against him. Richard's horse foundered in boggy ground, and the king was pulled down into a press of enemies on foot. Offered a horse to flee, tradition says he refused, and chose to die fighting where he stood.

Then they were on him. Forensic analysis of his skeleton by the University of Leicester found around eleven wounds, nine of them to the head, and the pattern tells you he had lost his helmet before the killing blows landed. Two of those head wounds were catastrophic and either would have killed him. One was a massive sharp-force injury to the base of the skull, most likely from a halberd or similar staff weapon, that sliced clean through and took off a section of bone, exposing the brain. Another was a blade driven up through the base of the skull and deep into the head. A sword or dagger point also punched through the top of the skull into the brain. He was, in effect, having his head hacked open from several directions at once by men crowding in to claim the kill.

What the wounds do not show is any sign of him defending himself in his last moments with his arms, because his body armour was still protecting his limbs. It was the head, once bared, that they went for. The picture the bones paint is of a king overwhelmed and brought low, then struck again and again in a matter of seconds by multiple attackers, exactly the death you would expect for a man surrounded and unhorsed in the middle of the enemy.

And the brutality did not stop when he died. Several injuries appear to have been inflicted after death, humiliations rather than combat wounds, including a blade thrust up through his buttock, almost certainly delivered as an insult while his stripped, naked corpse was slung over the back of a horse to be carried from the field and put on display. The last Plantagenet king, who had worn the crown of England, was butchered in the mud, degraded in death, and thrown into an unmarked grave. Five centuries later his battered skull, with every one of those wounds still legible in the bone, would prove that the grim old accounts of his end had been telling the truth all along.

1. Pasó seis meses rodando su papel de Eowyn en El señor de los anillos y tuvo que aprender a luchar con espadas y a montar a caballo. Las escenas de lucha fueron muy duras en la película. El traje de Eowyn pesaba entre 8 y 10 kilos, entre cotas de malla y todo lo demas. Era como llevar bolsas Pesadas de supermercado.

2. En las Dos Torres, Hay una escena eliminada en las cavernas del Abismo de Helm donde Éowyn lucha contra los Uruk Hai para defender a las mujeres y niños de Rohan. La actriz contó que se desilusionó un poco al no ver esa escena ni siquiera en la versión extendida pues le dedicó mucho tiempo y esfuerzo.

Jeanne Calment, a French supercentenarian who holds the officially verified record for the longest human lifespan in history, living to 122 years and 164 days (1875–1997). Born in Arles, France, she lived through remarkable historical shifts, famously remembering meeting Vincent van Gogh in her family’s shop when she was a teenager. Having outlived both her daughter and her grandson, Calment found herself with no remaining living heirs in her later years, leading to one of the most famous real estate deals in modern history.

In 1965, at the age of 90, Calment entered into a contingency contract known in France as en viager with a 47-year-old notary named André-François Raffray. Under the agreement, Raffray agreed to pay Calment a monthly sum of 2,500 French francs until her death, in exchange for ownership of her spacious Arles apartment once she passed. Given her advanced age, Raffray expected to pay for only a few years before inheriting the property, a standard financial gamble in French real estate.

Instead, Calment lived for another 32 years, outliving Raffray himself. When Raffray died of cancer in 1995 at age 77, his family was still legally obligated to continue the monthly payments. By the time Calment finally passed away in August 1997, the Raffray family had paid her more than double the actual market value of the apartment, prompting Calment to famously remark on her 120th birthday, "In life, one sometimes makes bad deals."

Beyond her famous real estate deal, Calment made pop culture history at age 121 when she released a four-track musical album titled Mistress of Time (Maîtresse du Temps). The 1996 release featured her speaking and recounting memories over a mix of background music, including funk, rap, and techno beats, making her the oldest recording artist in history.

In 1874, two little girls were prisoners in a Cheyenne camp. A US Army lieutenant knew he was outnumbered, but had the audacity to charge in to save their lives.

His name was Frank Baldwin, and he already had one Medal of Honor.

He'd earned the first ten years earlier, at Peachtree Creek during Sherman's Atlanta campaign. Under heavy fire, Baldwin ran ahead of his own men, broke into the Confederate line by himself, and came back out with two captured officers and an enemy battle flag.

That alone put him in rare company. But the second one made him a legend.

In 1874, on the Texas plains, a Cheyenne band had carried off four young sisters after murdering their parents and older siblings. Baldwin was leading two companies when he located the camp holding two of them, ages 7 and 5. He was outnumbered and the enemy held strong ground. Every rule said wait for reinforcements.

But Baldwin knew what waiting meant. If the camp scattered, the girls would be killed before help arrived.

So he attacked. The charge hit with such unexpected fury, the village broke and ran, abandoning everything. When his men swept through, they found the two sisters half-starved, hidden under a pile of buffalo hides. Still alive.

Frank Baldwin became the second man in American history to wear two Medals of Honor, and the first to earn them in two different wars.
