@bobbyfijan marginal cost is low on paper.
in reality, every added square foot compounds complexity.
the cheapest square foot is often the one you don’t build.
“generic” is rarely accidental.
it’s the byproduct of risk management.
the more stakeholders involved, the more a project converges toward something no one objects to.
Example in Stockholm of subtle but important mistakes in contemporary urban design:
- Good density but no enclosure, unclear urban structure
- Ugly generic architecture, could be anywhere on the planet
We crave beauty, detail, warmth and local character. These places lack all
“always opt for slow” sounds right, but most projects don’t get to choose.
financing, timelines, and value engineering push toward speed.
the question is what survives that pressure.
Slow versus Fast architecture.
Slow is built for the speed of people walking by, rich with detail, stories, and craftsmanship.
Fast architecture is built at the speed of cars, bereft of intrigue because these details can't be appreciated at high speeds.
Always opt for slow!
developers optimize for the pro forma.
architects optimize for the image.
no one is explicitly responsible for how a place feels five years later.
that’s the gap.
@bobbyfijan cheap for a reason
the question is whether that reason is temporary or structural
curious how these blocks have trended over the last 5–10 years?
Are you designing your life, or reacting to it?
Most people don’t design their lives.
they default into them.
A new episode of the Brick & Wonder podcast digs into this.

@andruyeung this is directionally right, but incomplete.
in a strong community the goal isn’t just to make the other person the hero. it’s to understand them well enough to connect them to the right people and opportunities.
creating value between people is the actual end goal.
@BobKnakal selling the future is the easy part.
holding onto that future through financing, approvals, and value engineering is where most projects quietly lose integrity.
most “luxury” buildings fail at the detail level.
you see it in the transitions
you feel it in the proportions
you notice it in the materials after six months
price and quality are barely correlated anymore.
