During my recent travels in China, I spent time speaking with Uyghurs, as well as with Tibetans in Xizang (Tibet).

In Lhassa I spoke with several people — a guide, a driver, a pilgrim outside the Jokhang, a Uyghur student — about daily life. None described systematic discrimination in either Xizang or Xinjiang. The temples were full of worshippers, so religious practice is certainly not discouraged.

Several volunteered, unprompted, an inventory of change: schools, electricity, roads cut from a day’s journey to a couple of hours, and — from my driver — early retirement benefits for Tibetan government employees. Personal observations are not definitive evidence, but they should at least give us pause before accepting simplistic accounts from any side.

All countries deserve scrutiny, however before Western media outlets is accepted about countries that the West is competing with, people ought try to experience first hand where possible, and where not, try to form their views based on less motivated narratives/sources.
