As Calabria in southern Italy burned, the media reached for the usual explanation: heat, drought, climate change.

Then, officials found the ignition devices: candles placed beneath combustible material, bottles fitted with wicks, rags soaked in flammable liquid.

Most sickeningly, cats were found with fuel-soaked rags tied to their tails and released into dry vegetation.

Someone wanted the countryside burning badly enough to torture animals and use them to spread the flames.

Calabria is not alone.

In Portugal, a 20-year-old was recently arrested over seven fires near Chaves. Another suspect was detained over five fires around Guimares.

In Spain, a man was arrested near the origin of the Lozoyuela fire, which burned roughly 700 hectares and forced evacuations.

While in Argentina, investigators found evidence of an accelerant at the origin of the Puerto Patriada fire.

Despite the best efforts of these depraved arsonists, though, burned area is at a record low in 2026 across Europe, Africa and the Americas. While the global trend remains firmly down.

Nobody has yet established who started the Calabria fires. But somebody prepared incendiary devices, soaked rags in fuel and tied them to terrified cats.

That was not 'climate change.'

New research claims human emissions are not driving atmospheric CO2.

A paper by Dai Ato ran multiple linear regressions for 1959 to 2022, testing two predictors of the annual CO2 increase: sea surface temperature and human emissions.

The result was clear: when the oceans warmed, CO2 levels rose almost exactly in step - about two to three parts per million for every one degree Celsius of warming.

Adding human emissions to the model didn't change the outcome.

Using only ocean temperature, the model reproduced global CO2 levels with near-perfect accuracy - a correlation of 0.995 and an error of just one to two ppm by 2022.

The main factor governing the annual increase in atmospheric CO2 concentration is sea surface temperature rather than human emissions.

Earlier studies have shown the same pattern. Temperature changes first, CO2 follows.

If Ato is correct, cutting human emissions won't lower atmospheric CO2 because it's the oceans that set the pace.
