@mattyglesias I don’t think people comprehend how much of the existing infrastructure on the NEC is leftover from the Pennsylvania Railroad. Some of it is so old that Amtrak is forced to cannabilize equipment for parts to keep the system operational.

@mattyglesias Not entirely true. The existing track features tighter turns & older bridges/tunnels which make high speed rail impossible. Not to mention the issues with supplying electrical power + the lack of constant tension in the catenary lines cause them to sag in warmer conditions.
