First, Republicans objected to private depositions, even though almost fifty of their members could attend.
Now, they don’t want public hearings.
The only consistency—
They don’t want the American people to learn the truth about the President’s serious misconduct.

When they found they lacked the courage to confront the most dangerous and unethical president in American history,
They consoled themselves by attacking those who did.

On 21 July 1786, the day of retribution, Charles-Henri was sent for and told that the prisoner had shown great displays of temper whilst in prison and would no doubt do so when informed of her sentence.
The Comtesse was not aware of the sentence for, as was the judicial custom, she wouldn’t be told anything until the day the punishment was to be carried out.
On hearing the sentence, Charles-Henri, the public executioner, sought clarification of that part which stipulated that the prisoner should be ‘beaten and birched naked’. He was told to arrange this as discreetly as possible
Comtesse Jeanne de la Motte (1756-91) was a notorious French adventuress & thief. In 1785, she stole a diamond necklace from Marie Antoinette, but was caught & sentenced to be whipped, branded on both shoulders with the letter ‘V’ (voleuse, thief) & imprisoned for life.
