The lyrics for "Hatikvah" (Israel's national anthem) were originally written as a poem in 1877 by Jewish poet Naphtali Herz Imber while he was living in Romania. It was later published as a nine-stanza poem titled “Tikvatenu” (Our Hope) in 1886 in Jerusalem.

The text reflects the enduring Jewish desire to live as a free people in Zion and Jerusalem.

Jewish immigrant Samuel Cohen, living in Ottoman-ruled palestine, set Imber's words to a melody derived from a Moldavian folk song. This tune traces its roots back to a 16th-century Italian song, La Mantovana.

The song became the rallying anthem at the Sixth Zionist Congress in Basel, famously sung by delegates opposing the Uganda Proposal to highlight their commitment to returning directly to Israel.

During the Holocaust, Hatikvah provided solace and defiance. It was sung by Czech Jews entering the gas chambers at Auschwitz-Birkenau in 1944.

When the State of Israel was established, the song was embraced as the country's anthem, though it was not formally codified at that time.

On November 10, 2004, the Knesset formally passed an amendment to the Flag and Coat-of-Arms Law, officially declaring Hatikvah as the national anthem of Israel.

On April 15, 1945, British troops liberated the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in Germany. The surviving 60,000 prisoners had seen and suffered unbelievable horrors. But they still had hope. Five days after liberation, the Jewish prisoners held a Shabbat service in the camp. It was the first time many of them had taken part in a Jewish service in six years. With what little energy they had left, they sang Hatikvah.

Her father, Avi, was on the phone with Gaya and believes he heard her last breaths when she attempted to flee the October 7th Hamas invasion by car, according to Times of Israel.

The moment was captured on the car’s dashcam as terrorists opened fire at the vehicle, peppering the windshield with bullets.

In the footage, the car slows and crashes into another vehicle on the side of the road, TOI reported.

“Then there were two deep breaths, as if she had no oxygen, as if she couldn’t breath, and then a deep, deep silence,” Avi Halifa told news of her daughter's death.

After the funeral, Gaya’s whole family — Avi, Sigal, Ido, and her sister Noga — each got a tattoo identical to Gaya’s: of a gramophone with a heart built in so she could “stay close."

Her parents added the date 7.10.2023.

Her name was Liana, she was a 16-year-old Ukrainian refugee living in Germany.

She was walking home from her apprenticeship when a migrant began sexually harassing her.

Terrified, Liana called her grandfather for help, telling him that a migrant was chasing her and sexually assaulting her. Her grandfather heard her scream… then silence. He never saw her again.

Authorities later told her parents she had been hit by a train. “Suicide. Case closed.” It looked like a cover-up.

But her family refused to give up. With strong pressure from the AfD demanding a real investigation, the truth finally emerged:
Liana was murdered. She was deliberately pushed onto the tracks by an Iraqi migrant.

The man was identified and arrested, but the outrage didn’t stop there.

He had an active deportation order since January 2025 that was never carried out. If the authorities had done their job, Liana would still be alive.

And it gets worse.
Liana’s mother knew there would be no real justice, and she was right.
A German court has now ruled that the Iraqi migrant who killed her will serve no prison time, claiming he suffers from “mental health issues.” He will instead stay in a comfortable psychiatric facility, paid for by German taxpayers.
