Development projects can’t scale on goodwill.
Private-sector partnerships fail when incentives are misaligned but unnamed.
A private actor may optimise for scale; a public actor for equity. Both can sign the same theory of change and still pull apart once money gets tight.

It has been an afternoon of deep and strategic deliberations, guided by @arif_neky, Founding Coordinator of the @sdgpartnership. The session offered a compelling exploration of financing and partnership strategies aimed at bridging the critical investment gap for achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Africa.🌟
Key insights gleaned from the discussions include the following:
𝐄𝐯𝐨𝐥𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐅𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐋𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐬𝐜𝐚𝐩𝐞: Acknowledgement of the ever-widening SDG financing gap, now estimated at $4 trillion globally, necessitating urgent, innovative approaches to meet the demands in critical sectors such as energy, infrastructure, and health.
𝐄𝐜𝐨𝐬𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦 𝐀𝐜𝐮𝐩𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭: Emphasis on employing a holistic, multistakeholder "ecosystem acupuncture" approach that aligns diverse public, private, and social sector actors to unlock synergies and scale impactful investments.
𝐈𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐅𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐌𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐬𝐦𝐬: Strategic deployment of tools such as Development Impact Bonds and green financing instruments to address sector-specific challenges, including adolescent health, water infrastructure, and agricultural post-harvest losses.
𝐌𝐨𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐳𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐃𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐞 𝐂𝐚𝐩𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐦𝐬: Recognition of the insufficiency of traditional funding sources like ODA and government budgets, and a call to action for mobilizing private sector investments and domestic resources through public-private partnerships.
𝐎𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐁𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐈𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭: Addressing systemic challenges—such as information asymmetry, perceived risks, and limited infrastructure—that impede private sector involvement in financing SDG-aligned projects.
𝐅𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐁𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐪𝐮𝐞 𝐏𝐢𝐥𝐨𝐭𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐒𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐬 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: Advocacy for transitioning from isolated pilot projects to large-scale, system-wide interventions that drive sustainable development across multiple sectors.
𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐜 𝐑𝐨𝐥𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐬: Highlighting the critical role of the SDGPP in curating robust investment pipelines, leveraging the convening power of the United Nations, and creating agile financing ecosystems that respond to regional and thematic priorities.
These strategic reflections underscore the need for structured, scalable, and collaborative approaches to address the pressing development financing gaps. The session reinforced the critical role of inclusive partnerships and innovative financing as enablers for sustainable growth across Africa.⚡️
