I've loved being a regional reporter in DC, but my next steps will be a bit different:
Next month, I'm joining the comms team at @FoodBankMetroDC, where I get to tell stories about the critical work they are doing to ensure families across the greater DC area have enough food.
The Capital Area Food Bank's new #HungerReport2023 reveals the persistent, staggering level of hunger across the Greater Washington region:
1 in 3 residents -- 1.2 million people -- struggled to access enough food last year.

Save the date: Our #HungerReport2023 will be released Tuesday. It will include staggering new data on food insecurity in our region, & insights on many forces that continue to make it difficult to access enough food.

"This marks the first time in over 100 years that the state’s largest newspaper will not have a reporter assigned to cover New Jersey’s U.S. Senators and members of the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington."

Fewer regional reporters in DC means important questions on issues that matter to people across the country won’t be asked in Capitol hallways and in the White House briefing room. That means less information for voters and a less informed democracy.
So sad to see this news. Salant is a tenacious reporter who has covered DC for years with an eye to what NJ readers need to know. He also has always been a key advocate to ensure regional outlets have the access needed to ask key questions on behalf of their readers.
I was going to wait until my last day of work but @MattFriedmanNJ beat me to it. @NJAdvanceMedia is closing its DC bureau at the end of the week after almost nine years and nine reporting awards, including the Robin Toner Prize, Dirksen Award and two NJ Press Association awards.
During the last month, my son’s elementary school has had a basement flood, heating problems and now a gas leak. This is not sustainable @dcpublicschools@DCPSChancellor@CMZParker5

Scoop: President Biden will Weds. announce a White House conference on hunger, nutrition and health scheduled for Sept. in Washington.
The last WH conference on food was held during the Nixon admin & led to major policy changes, incl expansion of food stamps & school meals. /1
@julianrouth @JonathanTamari@MaxMMarin I’ve been thinking all day about this 2019 conversation with Casey, and his efforts to distance himself from both Rs fighting to end abortion through the courts and Ds fighting to protect access: https://t.co/R4P4yXYipb
This finally happens … immediately after my four-year-old and I have recovered from a COVID infection. 🤦♀️
Still very interested in seeing this play out, but the amount of faith in public institutions that has been lost due to delays and poor messaging is huge.
Scoop: MODERNA on Thursday is expected to ask FDA to authorize its Covid vaccine for kids under 6.
However, it could still take until early May for the company to submit all the data the agency needs. w/ @owermohle@davidalim@katherineefoley: https://t.co/0b8bamnx60
“I’ve been winging it,” said Lewis. “There are some nights I don’t eat because I only have enough to feed them. I’ll eat whatever is left over on their plates. I just tell them I’m not hungry.”
Thanks to @lreiley for explaining why food banks still see high levels of need.
"We were the last journalists in Mariupol. Now there are none." The remarkable story of how an @AP team hid from Russian troops in a hospital, wearing surgical scrubs, to continue telling the world of the city's destruction. https://t.co/nAlsyl6rpN
🧵 As we reflect on two years since COVID’s onset, we’re reminded of the many people who rose to the occasion to help address historic levels of need. Today, we shine a light on supporters and partners who went above and beyond in their efforts to curb food insecurity in the DMV.
NEW: D.C. Health has lifted its indoor school mask mandate. It's now up to DCPS, charters, day cares and private schools to decide whether to lift the requirement.
DCPS says masks are still required for now inside and chancellor will be "engaging our union partners"
